saturday morning

another day, another stretch of hours in the lab. i had realized that maybe i needed to keep going with my research for just a couple more hours and finally take sunday as my break. if only my dreams would let me rest.

last night had been another strange one—i didn't see him, but instead, i saw smoke and a girl's laughter echoing through it all. somewhere in the chaos, i heard my own voice murmuring, "not yet. hold on just a little longer."

i woke up with the words still on my lips and a faint ache in my chest.

ayumi

so are drinks on me, y/n?

oh, right. ayumi had sent me the invitation last night. maybe going with her and keigo didn't seem like such a bad idea.

but i really didn't want to head downtown. that area is always filled with trouble.

still thinking about it ayuu, it's a bummer that it's in downtown.

oh!

that's okay y/n, then i'll see you monday in my apartment to talk about the reunion! xx

well, at least she got the hint. now i needed to get ready to head over to the lab for a half day.

"morning, y/n!" mei greeted cheerfully as i stepped into the lab, goggles perched on her forehead like always.

"morning," i replied, setting down two cups: one of coffee and the other a smoothie. "here. figured you could use this."

she gasped dramatically, grabbing the cup. "you're my favorite person in the whole world."

"don't let the smoothie hear that," i joked, already settling into the short day's work.

"let's try to finish this quickly so we can all enjoy the rest of the weekend!" mei said, handing me a fresh batch of samples.

"sure thing, mei."

mei and i spent most of the morning doing our own things but talking peacefully. we had gotten a lot done.

by the time keigo showed up, his usual breezy confidence radiating from every step, the smell of fried chicken was already filling the air. mei had been adamant about ordering something "fun" for lunch, and honestly, i didn't have the energy to argue.

little did i know it was a trick from her to draw keigo into the lab.

"am i interrupting something important, or can i crash the party?" keigo asked, leaning casually against the doorframe. "hey! you're having fried chicken without me? low blow."
