i walked slowly through the moonlit graveyard, the cool night air whispering through the trees. the quiet felt like a cruel contrast to the storm still raging in my mind. it had been a few days since my intense interaction with dabi, but i could still see the hurt in his eyes, hear the break in his voice.
"why?"
to my surprise, the grave wasn't as neglected as i thought it would be. fuyumi or natsuo had probably visited recently. their care was evident in the freshly tended flowers and the clean headstone.
i placed a lonely yet beautiful rose on the tombstone, knelt down, and opened my book. reading aloud, i chose a passage that i thought was fitting for him:
"it is not our abilities that show what we truly are... it is our choices."
"i know you're probably watching from afar, dabi," i murmured, my eyes closed. "i hope you're satisfied now."
silence.
after a few minutes of quiet reflection, i stood up and left, heading home to shut off for the night. once home, i threw on my pajamas and hopped into bed, seeking the solace of sleep.
that night, i had a dream—a vivid, haunting dream. i was standing in a lush green garden, the kind that seemed to go on forever, with a gentle breeze brushing against my skin. i was wearing a beautiful sundress, and on my finger, there was a golden wedding band, gleaming in the sunlight.
then, i saw him. a small boy with white hair and ocean-blue eyes, running full speed towards me. he looked just like touya, a perfect miniature version.
"moooom, where have you been? dad's been looking for you!"
"i–" i stammered, confused but utterly mesmerized by this child of mine. he was beautiful.
suddenly, my eyes were covered by a pair of gentle hands, and i heard the familiar voice that had lingered in my heart for so long.
"close your eyes." it was touya's voice. my heart raced, my breath caught in my throat.
"don't peek, mom!" the boy's voice chimed in, full of innocent joy.
touya guided me further into the garden, his hands still over my eyes. when he finally removed them, the sight before me took my breath away.
"open them, mommy!"
in front of me was a small yet beautiful cake, surrounded by candles and a spread of snacks on the grass. a picnic, just for us.
"oh gosh..." i whispered, tears of joy welling up in my eyes.
"happy birthday, my love," touya whispered, his lips brushing my exposed shoulder. with a flick of his fingers, he lit the candles with his flames. "you're getting older."
both of them—touya and our son—sang happy birthday to me, their arms wrapped around me in a warm embrace. my tears flowed freely, but they were tears of happiness.
after blowing out the candles, i kissed them both. touya's lips lingered on mine for a moment longer, as if he was savoring the taste of a life we'd never have.
"someone wanted to show you something," touya said, his voice filled with pride as he nodded toward our son.
the boy stepped forward, his small hands filled with sharp ice. he pointed them toward the sky, and as the ice shards flew, flames erupted from his palms, melting the ice into droplets of water. the droplets caught the sunlight, creating a small rainbow above us
"what do you think, mom?" he grinned. "dad taught me how to use my quirk!"
"w-what?" i turned to look at touya, who watched our son with pride. "he has a quirk?"
"we kept it a secret, honey," touya chuckled softly. "his quirk manifested about a month ago while you were working."
"he inherited our family's quirks," touya continued, his voice tinged with awe. "he got my fire, but also ice. he got wind and water from your side. he can manipulate all elements except ground, y/n."
"just like how our family planned it." i hugged our son tightly. "you're amazing!"
"i love you, mom and dad!"
i woke up with a sigh, the remnants of my dream clinging to me, refusing to let go. it was everything i ever wanted—a perfect life with touya, the family we could've had.
but as i lay in bed, reality washed over me. it was just a dream. a dream that made the emptiness in my heart even more profound.
i quickly went through my morning routine, trying to shake off the lingering sadness. after a rushed breakfast, i headed to my office.
