I jolted awake when something pushed off my leg.

It felt much too early, and I didn’t want to get ready for school yet.

“Ten more minutes mom.” I slurred the words, still mostly asleep.

I realized I was much too uncomfortable to be in my bed. It felt as if I had slept in a chair the whole night. My back and neck ached unbearably. And one of my legs had fallen asleep.

The fogginess of sleep slowly melted, and then I remembered where I was. My eyes snapped open, tiredness forgotten.

Bonnie was standing at the far corner of the cage, as far from me as she could get. She was reclined against the wall as if she couldn’t hold her weight up on her own. She stared at me dejectedly. Her eyes were just as drawing as when she was in wolf form. They were a dark blue. The blue was like molten lava, seeming to smother and move around the black pupil. She skirmished under my gaze clearly uneasy.

She had left the woolen blanket on my lap, so she was naked again. On her chest I saw the shape, the one I had been barely able to see in her wolf form. It was a half moon, just like I had first guessed, facing to the right. It was a darker color than the rest of her skin which was white like milk, and this made it easy to pick out.

She quickly swept the room with her restless eyes, and then they rested back on mine.

Her lips pulled back from her teeth in a wry, and twisted smile. It made no sense for her to smile that way. I probed, trying to fathom what was behind that smile. And abruptly I understood.

She realizes we are alone.

How anyone can believe her to be stupid I could not comprehend, she is smart.

I searched my mind for a way I could deter her before she could attack. She feinted to the left crouching low to the ground. Her eyes started shifting color, from blue to green.

“Bonnie!” I yelled not knowing what else to say.

But this seemed to be the right thing, because she froze in her crouched position. Her eyes appeared befuddled, and she looked at me with suspicion, but to my relief, her eyes shifted back to blue.

Her brow furrowed as this complex crux suddenly came before her. She did not know what to do. She looked very peeved by this occurrence.

I used this to my advantage.

“That’s your name isn’t it, Bonnie right?” she continued to stare at me mutely. I raked my brain for something that could keep her entertained.

“My names, Taylor.” I introduced myself in a pacifying tone. “I bet you like stories, would you like to hear one?”

She didn’t speak but folded her legs under her, all the while continuing to watch me carefully.  I would have to treat her like a frightened wild animal, no sudden movements.

I mirrored her movement, slowly so not to alarm her, and launched into the story of the three little pigs. The first story that came to my mind.

She especially liked the wolf. Her eyes glowed whenever I spoke of it. So, I changed the wolf into a girl and called her Bonnie. She was absorbed in the story, and almost smiled when I called the wolf Bonnie. So I guess she knew the real story, but she never said anything, so I just continued.

She leaned toward me listening intently. And after a while I forgot to be cautious and I started waving my arms around to help paint the pictures of what I was describing in the story. She flinched a little at my unexpected movement, but soon settled back into her original state.

When I finished with that story I continued to the story of the little red riding hood, without any probing.

But she didn’t like the ending to this one, and her face became forlorn.

I regretted not changing the story, so before she could think too much on it, I continued with, “and the magic god of all wolves, came down to the where the dead wolf lay, and brought him back to life, but on the sole promise that he would  never eat old ladies or children again, the end.”

She looked at me with amusement. And half a smile lit her features.

She suddenly stiffened, and I mirrored her movement, wondering what I had done wrong…and what would be my punishment.

She lifted her head to the air blowing out of the air-conditioner, and pulled back her teeth in a threatening growl.

She turned her baleful eyes my way. She was accusing me of something, but of what, I had not the faintest idea since she wouldn’t speak to me.

Her eyes swiftly changed from blue to yellow, no pausing in between this time. She crouched in front of me preparing to attack.

“No, Bonnie!” I screamed trying to get her to stop her attack, but her name meant nothing to her now.

She leaped, changing into a wolf in mid air, her mouth open wide with her teeth heading strait for my throat.
