(Dr. Niki's P.O.V.)

“Wow! Do you see that!”

“I never seen anything like that bird before in my life,” Cristiana responded.

“I know! What if it’s a new species…this must be my lucky day!”

I was looking through the binoculars at the beautiful silver bird. It was definitely a bird of prey, of that I was sure. It had the curved beak and the sleek wings. It looked sort of like an eagle, but was much too big. And the curve of its wings and neck was wrong. I had looked through all the books and I knew that nothing like this beauty had ever appeared on its pages.

Cristiana, a veterinarian technician, turned to look at me with wide eyes, “certainly a shocking discovery, but how are we going to prove that we’ve seen it?”

“Shoot I left my camera at home!” I groaned, not that it would do much good anyway, the bird was much too far away to take a picture. I was only able to see it through my binoculars.

I looked away from the binoculars, giving them to Cristiana once more, and thought about how I was going to prove there was a new species in the vicinity.

A shot rang out through the forest, and hundreds of birds, all species I knew, escaped to the sky, crying out in shock.

“Dr. Niki!” the panic in Cristiana’s voice was apparent.

I turned to her in horror, already knowing what she was going to say but hoping desperately that I was wrong.

“Dr. Niki they shot that bird right out of the sky!”

“NO!” my scream of defiance echoed out around me, “those poachers! Those good for nothing murders!

“Cristiana tell me were the bird fell, I’ll go see if I can do anything to save it…“sigh, “you’ll be able to handle everything while I’m gone?”

“Go!” she pushed me toward my bike. “I’ll man the fort while your gone, just hurry and help that poor creature!” she pointed north.

I nodded and sprinted to my motorcycle, jumping on and kicking it to life in one swinging motion. The rear tire spit mud and dirt back, as it leaped forward.

My motor bike growled under me, slipping in the loam. I clenched my teeth, and tightened my hold on the handles. Though I wanted to go fast, the twigs and branches stretching in front of me, trying to trip my bike, got in the way.

It was hard to find a way through the close packed trees, but I managed; though the going was slower than I would have liked. Especially knowing that time was of essence when you were dealing with a shot bird. The poor creatures didn’t respond well to shock and this one could end up dying before I even got there.

Or the poacher could have picked up his prize.

            I growled under my breath.
