Kira's POV
I helped Y/N into the car, my hands lingering a second longer than necessary-as if reassuring myself that she was truly here, that she was real.
Her body was weak, her movements slow, but her eyes... her eyes never left me. Watching. Searching. Feeling.
As I pulled out of the hidden exit, my heartbeat drummed violently against my ribs. The security cameras were still looping the fake footage, making it seem like she was still lying there, unconscious, trapped in that dark, lifeless room. But in reality, she was right beside me.
The streets stretched ahead, swallowed by the late-night hush. The only sound was the low hum of the engine, yet the silence between us carried its own weight. Heavy. Stifling. Unspoken.
My thoughts raced, tumbling over worst-case scenarios.
Had we covered our tracks well enough? Would Joan suspect?
I turned my head slightly, stealing a glance at her. Under the soft glow of the moonlight, her face looked fragile yet unreadable. I didn't know what would happen tonight-I didn't know if I'd even make it out alive.
But what I did know, with absolute certainty, was that I couldn't afford to lose her.
Because the truth was, I wasn't afraid for myself. It was them.
Y/N.
Jenny.
They were the ones in danger because of me. And no matter what, I had to make sure they survived this.
The ride felt both endless and fleeting at the same time, and before I knew it, we had arrived.
The abandoned construction site loomed ahead, its skeletal remains of rusted steel and half-built concrete standing as a monument of forgotten time. The air smelled of dust and damp earth, but beneath it all, there was something else-something suffocating.
Tension.
I turned off the engine, gripping the steering wheel for just a second longer before exhaling slowly.
"We're here," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.
Y/N didn't speak. She only nodded, but in that split second, I saw it-the pain, the hurt buried deep in her eyes before she forced it away, masking it behind a neutral expression.
She was good at that.
But I knew. I always knew.
The crunch of gravel under our feet echoed in the vast, empty space as we walked inside. Shadows stretched across the cracked pavement, swallowing the edges of the dim streetlights. My heart pounded, my pulse loud in my ears as my eyes scanned the space.
And then-I saw her.
Jenny.
She stood beside Elisa, small but unshaken. Her tiny frame was tense, her expression cautious, but she wasn't crying. She was strong. My daughter.
"As I said, I brought her back to you. Now, give me my daughter back." My voice was firm, but fear curled at the edges, threatening to crack my resolve.
"Kira, you can take Jenny back. But just to tell you-she wasn't kidnapped like you saw in the video. It was a plan to-"
Elisa never got the chance to finish her sentence. A gunshot shattered the night. One of Elisa's men crumpled to the ground, a dark red pool spreading beneath him. My instincts took over. With a sharp breath, I shoved Y/N toward Elisa, yanking the gun from the back of my pocket in one swift motion.
"Kira! Get over here!" Elisa's voice was sharp, urgent, as she gestured toward the safety of her car. But my feet refused to move. Because I saw him.
Emerging from the darkness, stepping into the dim glow of the broken lights, his movements slow, deliberate-like a predator savoring the moment before the kill. A gun dangled loosely in his hand, but the real weapon was his smile. That smile.
