Death Note L

Battle

L sat in his usual sitting stance on an armchair, sucking on a delicious looking lollipop. Altogether, the scene looked weird, as the armchair was in the middle of a large and empty warehouse, abandoned by the looks of it.

The warehouse had two entrances. Both were locked.

A dark shadow swooped in from the wall. 

'You are Kira?' L asked monotonously.

Ryuk landed in front of him, shaking his head, and handed him the Death Note. Light's Death Note. 

L stared at it but didn't touch it.

'Light's?'

Ryuk nodded.

Watari walked forwards and took the black notebook.

The names went on and on.

L looked at Watari.

The aged man nodded.

'Then it's confirmed.' L said. 

Watari took out a phone and exchanged a few inaudible words. 

'The police are arresting Light Yagami right now.' L said, staring at Ryuk.

Ryuk said nothing.

'Ryuk. Two theories: Either you've betrayed Light-kun and came here by yourself, or you've being pretending to be tricked by Light-kun to come here. Since you said yourself that you're not interested in helping anyone, then I doubt Light made you come here as Kira.'

He took out the chewed lollipop stick and studied it intently. 

'So the only theory that works is the latter; where you are pretended to be tricked by Light. He lured you here to face me, so he must have had some sort of guarantee that you'd stay here. If you didn't know, I received a note that Kira was coming to face me here, 4pm sharp. 

'He wanted it to look like Kira was you all along.' 

L's face suddenly changed, though Ryuk wasn't sure what, since his face always looked like that. After a while, he simply concluded that he hadn't seen right.

'Misa Amane, isn't it?'

Ryuk's eyes widened. How had he known? This guy sure is smart.

L studied his reaction carefully. Ryuk almost felt creeped out.

'Shinigami Rem also had a weakness for her. Maybe Light thought you felt something for her?' He said it in such a way that it didn't sound like he was speculating, but more like he thought it was definitely so.

'Well, I saw Light making a fake call from you about saving Misa Amane by coming here...I guess he thought I liked her.'

'But he thought wrong...why did he bet all of this plan on this one factor?'

'He has gone pretty careless lately.' Ryuk shrugged.  

L stared thoughtfully. 

'But don't you feel sad at all that Light has turned out to be Kira again?'

L was surprised at this question. 'I guess I am a little bit disappointed. I thought he would have made a pretty good policeman or FBI. But justice needs to be done.'

Ryuk stared. Whoa...this guy...if only there were one like him in the Shinigami realm.

'But one thing, Shinigami. Will you tell me why you gave me this Death Note?'

'Ah, well, I had hoped to make this more battle between you and Light more interesting. But I guess I was wrong.' Ryuk flapped his wings and disappeared beyond the wall.
