They say every Olympic performance is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. But no one ever tells you what it feels like to know it might also be your last.

I skate out into the spotlight, heart slamming against my ribs like it’s trying to break free. My breath fogs in the cold air, but I can’t feel the chill anymore. My body is already burning. The injury I’ve been hiding for weeks—a fracture in my lower spine—has been screaming louder every day. Doctors told me not to skate. Said it could cause permanent damage. Maybe worse.

But I looked them in the eyes and said, “Tape it up.”

I wasn’t doing this for medals.
I was doing this for me.
And for her.

Taylor Swift stands just off the ice, her hands clasped over her heart, watching me like I’m the only thing in the world. She’s more than a sponsor—she’s been my anchor. When I wanted to give up, she sang life back into me. When I was skating on empty, she gave me purpose.

The music starts. One of hers—something unreleased, written just for tonight. The haunting piano cuts through the silence, and I let go.

Each movement is poetry written in pain. My body knows the routine by heart, but tonight… tonight it’s fighting me.

My spine protests every spin. Every jump is a roll of the dice. One wrong angle, one misstep, and I could go down and never get back up.

But I keep going.

Because I can feel her eyes on me.
Because the crowd is holding its breath.
Because I need to finish this.

Then it happens.

A lift into a jump. Too high. Too sharp. My body twists in the air, and when I land—
white-hot agony.

I can’t breathe. My legs tremble. My vision sparks like fireworks behind my eyes. Something inside me gives, snaps. My spine feels like it’s tearing apart.

The world goes sideways.

But I don’t stop.

I can’t stop.
I skate through the pain, through the terror, through the blinding blur.

I’m not just dancing anymore.
I’m fighting for my life.

Blood rushes in my ears. I can’t feel my legs. I don’t know how I’m still upright. The final spin comes, and I throw everything I have into it. My body collapses the moment the music ends—I hit the ice on my knees, gasping, hands shaking.

The crowd erupts. But I barely hear them.

I make it three steps off the rink before my legs give out.

I’m falling—

But I don’t hit the floor.

Taylor catches me mid-collapse. She drops to her knees with me in her arms like she’s done it a thousand times before. Her face is pale, eyes wide and brimming with panic.

“Y/N!” she chokes out, holding me close. “Oh my god—someone call medics! Now!”

I try to smile, but I can’t move. Everything hurts. Breathing is hard. Talking is harder.

“You finished it,” she whispers, stroking my hair. “You insane, beautiful idiot. You finished it.”

“I had to,” I murmur, voice barely there. “You were watching.”
