The room was quiet except for the steady hum of the ultrasound machine. The gel felt cold against Gracie’s belly as the doctor moved the probe, his face unreadable.
Then, his voice cut through the silence like a blade.
"I can’t see a heartbeat."
Gracie’s breath hitched. My stomach dropped.
The doctor kept searching, sliding the probe over her belly again and again, but the screen remained heartbreakingly still.
"No," Gracie whispered, her voice trembling. "No, look again. Please."
Her panic surged, and I instinctively grabbed her hand, squeezing it tightly. She was shaking. So was I.
The doctor’s brows knit together as he checked once more, his expression grim. Finally, after a long, agonizing pause, he exhaled.
"There’s nothing," he mumbled, barely above a whisper. Then he looked at us, his voice softer now. "I’m so sorry."
Gracie’s whole body tensed. She bit her lip hard enough to draw blood, her chest rising and falling in uneven breaths. She was trying—desperately—to hold it together.
But the weight of those words crushed everything.
I felt the world blur around us, sounds fading into nothing. The walls of the room seemed to close in, suffocating us.
We just sat there, staring at the screen, as if somehow, some way, the baby would appear, the heartbeat would come back.
But nothing changed.
At some point, the doctor murmured something before stepping out of the room, giving us space. I barely registered it.
Then, a sound ripped through the silence—a raw, agonizing scream.
Gracie.
She collapsed forward, sobbing so violently that her whole body trembled. And all I could do was hold her.
I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her against me as tightly as I could, as if holding her together could stop her from falling apart.
Her hands clutched at my shirt, desperate, broken. "Why?" she choked out between sobs. "Why did this happen?"
Tears streamed down my face as I pressed my lips to her hair, rocking her gently. "I don’t know, my love," I whispered, my voice shaking. "I don’t know."
I wanted to take her pain, to carry it for her, to fix this. But I couldn’t. I was in to much pain to take her pain.
So I just held her, whispering over and over, "I’m here. I’ve got you. I love you."

Hours had passed. Gracie and I hadn’t moved from our spot. We just sat there, holding each other in silence.
Then, suddenly, Gracie shifted. "Let go of me," she whispered, her voice hollow, but it still made my heart ache.
I froze, my arms tightening around her for just a second before I let them fall away. She stood up slowly, her movements heavy.
"Take care of Alison," she mumbled, her voice barely above a breath. "She… she doesn’t need to see me like this."
I reached for her instinctively, my fingers wrapping around her wrist. "D-don’t leave me," I stuttered, my voice cracking under the weight of my own grief.
