“Would you want your speech to be in poem type?” Prouvaire asked him
“Sure. That would be great.” Marius retorted as he playfully played with the ring.
“Nice ring mon ami. What’s that for?” Feuilly inquired as he patted Marius’ shoulders
“It’s for his wedding proposal.” Prouvaire whispered to Feuilly’s ear
“Wow! That’s sounds interesting.” Feuilly sat down beside Marius. “When are you going to propose to Cosette?”
“Later. Probably during dinnertime.”
“Okay! Good Luck mon ami!” Feuilly said as he left the room.
“Here. I’m finished.” Prouvaire told Marius.
Marius read his speech silently in the white parchment Prouvaire wrote on. He smirked as he read it. Then he looked at Prouvaire.
“It’s great. I love it Prouvaire! Thank you.”
“My pleasure.” Prouvaire grinned.
While Marius continued reading the poem, the boys inside the room heard a scream. They were all shocked and Enjolras rushed outside. The scream was heard again and Enjolras followed the sound. He thought that it was from the stairs so he went there. He saw Feuilly. His arm was injured.
“Feuilly! What happened?” Enjolras asked as he held his injured arm.
“Stop touching that! It’s painful! I slipped and my left arm fell under me.”
Enjolras asked Feuilly to stay and he went back to the room.
“Joly, it’s Feuilly. He broke his arm. He needs your help.”
Joly was a medical student and during times when some Les Amis members were injured, he was the one who took care of them. He was like a doctor to them.
Joly and Enjolras rushed outside. The both of them carried Feuilly back to the room.
“Grantaire, can you please get my first aid kit in our room.”
Grantaire left and came back with the first aid kit.
“Thanks ‘Taire” Joly said as he took the kit.
He put some medicine on Feuilly’s arm and got the gauze. He wrapped it around the arm and wrapped it again with cloth. Then, he made an arm cast and put it on Feuilly.
“Be careful next time. You must rest first until you feel better.” Joly told him
“I’m fine. Thank you.”
The boys rested after that. Then Gavroche ran to their room.
“Keep Quiet Mon Amis. It’s Javert!”
Silence was in the room. After Javert went away, the boys rested again.
Hours passed and it was already 6:00 p.m. It’s dinnertime.
Marius already memorized his speech for his engagement. He put the ring in his pocket.
“Ready?” Prouvaire asked Marius.
“Yeah. Wish me luck.”
They proceeded to the dining table. Meanwhile during their meal, Marius stood up and went beside Cosette. He knelt down and started his speech.
When I first saw you…
You burst like the music of angels, the light of the sun
And my life seemed to stop as if something has scarcely begun.
My heart was full of love
My heart was full of song
Cosette, Cosette
I saw you waiting and I knew
That you loved me too
My dear, you mean like a world to me
So may I ask if will you marry me?
“Oh Marius. How sweet of you! Yes! I will marry you!”
Then Marius put on the ring on her. He carried Cosette and they spun around. Eponine looked at them, forcing herself to smile like the others. She felt like she was on her own again. She looked like she wished that she didn’t live. Eponine secretly loved Marius. She ran away and left the house.
“What happened to her?” Enjolras asked Feuilly but he just shrugged his right shoulder.
“I’ll follow her.” Joly told them. He stood up and left.
When the other boys finished their meal after a few minutes, they heard gunshots outside.
