The two exited the room. Then, they went to Grantaire. He was in his room, reading some books.
“Hi Grantaire!” Enjolras greeted his friend
“Hi mon ami! What brings you here?”
“I need your help.”
“In what?”
“I need your help in confronting Monsieur Madeleine.”
“What? Why?”
“The Inspector is still alive!”
“Javert?”
“Yes.”
“He lied to us. He told us that he killed the Inspector. Ok Enjolras. I’m going to help you.”
“Thank You!” he told Grantaire as he hugged him. He turned to Gavroche. “Show us his room Gavroche.”
They slowly went to Monsieur Madeleine’s room. When they arrived there, they didn’t even knock on his door. They just barged in.
“Enjolras? Grantaire? Gavroche? What brings you here?”
“Monsieur, we have to talk.” Enjolras told him
“Sure thing Monsieur. Have a seat.”
“We don’t have sit down Monsieur.” Grantaire informed him. “The only thing we want is your honesty!”
“Did you kill Inspector Javert?” Enjolras started questioning
“Yes. I did! You saw me remember?”
“Liar! If you killed him, why did I see him roaming around the streets?” Gavroche told him
“Okay Fine!! I did not kill the Inspector! I lied to you!”
“And why?” Enjolras questioned him
“Because I was a good man! He was chasing me for 17 years because I broke parole! But even if vengeance was mine, I still gave him back his life! My real name is Jean Valjean!”
“Do you know that he is a great threat to us? We took him and threw him in the tavern! He might take his revenge on us anytime!” Grantaire cried out
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to do that. I didn’t mean to lie!”
Enjolras fisted his hand. He was about to punch Jean Valjean in the face when somebody opened the door.
“What’s going on?” Cosette exclaimed. “Enjolras, how dare you attempt to punch my father!”
Cosette pushed Enjolras away and hugged her father.
“I’m sorry Cosette. But he is a liar!”
Enjolras went out and banged the door. Gavroche and Grantaire followed him.
“Papa, are you okay?”
“Yes Cosette. I’m fine.”
“What were they talking about? Why did they call you a liar?”
“It’s nothing Cosette. I’m too tired to tell you.” He lied to his daughter
“Okay Papa. I won’t ask again anyway. Bye Papa! I’m going back to my room.”
Jean Valjean sat on his bed and sighed. Then he put his left hand on his right wrist. Even though years have passed, the marks of the chains are still there.
