“He’s not going to attend the wedding?” Enjolras asked

Marius nodded and tears started to fall from Cosette’s eyes.

“He told me that he’s going to a journey. And he said that it will be a long way away.” Marius said “Enjolras, let’s go to your room. I have to tell you something privately.”

“Okay.”

Marius and Enjolras went to the room together. Then, they locked the room to make sure that no one can interrupt them. They sat down on the bed.

“Now, what are you going to tell me?”

“About Monsieur Madeleine”

“What about him?”

“Please don’t tell anybody about this.” Marius put his hands on Enjolras’ shoulders.

“I promise.”

“He didn’t go on a journey. He left to surrender to Javert because he stole bread to save his sister’s son a long time ago. His real name is-“

“Jean Valjean.”

“Yeah. Jean Valjean. How did you know?”

“He told me. He didn’t kill Javert during the night of the revolution.”

“He told me about that too. He was sorry.” Marius told him

Gavroche was outside the whole time. He was eavesdropping. He had plans to tell Cosette but before he left to go downstairs, Enjolras opened the room door.

“Hey Gavroche. Are you spying on us again?” Enjolras laughed. “I know you Gavy. You always do that.”

“Fine! I was spying on you!”

“Go inside. Quick.”

Enjolras locked the door when he and Gavroche went in the room. Enjolras sat down on the bed and held Gavroche’s shoulders. The young boy was standing in front of him.

“Don’t tell her about what you heard outside. Don’t tell Cosette.”

“Okay. But I have one condition.”

“What?”

“Pay me ten francs.” Gavroche extended his arm with his palm open.

Enjolras rolled his eyes and searched for money in his pocket. Then, he handed Gavroche the money.

“Thanks!” Gavroche left the room happily with his money.

Marius approached Enjolras and handed him ten francs. Enjolras looked at him.

“Here you go. Take it. I’ll pay for Gavroche. I know that you don’t have that much money anymore.”

“Thank you.” He gratefully accepted the money and smiled

The both of them left the room. When they arrived downstairs, the other boys were chatting and drinking brandy and wine. Prouvaire stood up.

“Enjolras! Marius! Have some wine and brandy. Let’s have a little fun.”

Marius and Enjolras looked at one another. They smiled and turned to Prouvaire and nodded. They sat down and drank some wine and talked with Gavroche, Feuilly, Prouvaire and Grantaire.
