*DYLANS POV*
When I see my Dad, I am relieved. But that slowly turns into fear when he sees Maia.
"Dylan, what is Maia doing here at four in the morning!" He whispers harshly. He is so pissed, and I am so screwed. Maia shifts uncomfortably next to me.
"She's visiting." That's all I can come up with at the moment, and it doesn't pay off when my father's face turns red with anger.
"She's visiting? That's the best answer you could come up with?" Before I can answer he holds his hand up silencing me.
"Maia, you need to leave. I will be contacting your aunt and uncle in the morning. Son, go to your room. We will talk about this in the morning as well." His voice is full of anger and I turn to Maia as she walks to the front door.
"Go. I'll call you later."
"Okay." She looks just as embarrassed as I am.
She leaves and when she's out of sight I head to the stairs. I turn to look at my father who's face has turned from anger to confusion. I quickly run back up to my room before he can say anything else.
***
In the morning I get up and head downstairs, knowing I'm gonna get an ear full from my parents. I need to clean up the disaster that was last night. I see my mother and father sitting at the kitchen table and approach them slowly.
"Look who's up." My mother says. She must know because she does not sound happy.
"What were you thinking bringing a girl into this house in the middle of the night?" My dad gets right to the point.
"She couldn't sleep!" I shout back. That must have been the most pathetic excuse on the planet.
My dad scoffs and is about to continue but I cut him off.
"She just lost her father!" I elaborate, "I am the only she's made friends with. She came to me last night for comfort, nothing happened. I'm not lying." I run a hand through my hair, frustrated.
My mother's face turns to worry.
"She lost her father?" My mother asks, moving on to the new gossip she's received and can share later.
"Wait, don't dismiss the fact that they were still alone together!" My father looks to my mother with complete disbelief on his face.
"No, I know. But she just lost her father, we should cut her some slack." My mother replies softly.
My dad rolls his eyes and puts his hand on his forehead and I smile triumphantly.
"I said her some slack, not you. You're grounded for 2 weeks." My mother adds with a point of her finger.
I put my hands up in surrender. "Okay." I reply. There's a silence that follows and I grab a bowl from one of the cabinets.
"Have you ever seen Maia shift before?" My father asks before I reach into the fridge.
"What? Yeah. I have. Why?" I don't like where this is going.
"When we go running as a pack, she's never there. I was just curious." He says shaking his head.
"She's a very private person. She can be shy." I tell him. It's not a complete lie.
"Invite her to come with us next time. There's nothing to be shy about." My father smiles.
