Flashback: 2nd year middle school. (Yamaguchi’s side)

Another night, another email was sent, and another hangout. (F/n), after receiving a mild beating from her mom, sent an email to Yamaguchi and asked if he was willing to hang out later that night. Yamaguchi replied within an instant and agreed with no hesitation. The two were now lying down on a blanket on top of a small grassy hill.
“Do you ever think you’d fall in love again?” (F/n) asked out of nowhere.
Yamaguchi, although taken aback by the question, took some real thought into it before answering, “Probably.”
(F/n) hummed.
“Why?” Yaamguchi turned his head to see her side profile. “Do you think you’d fall in love again?”
(F/n) stayed silent for a while, her thoughts racing while she looked for an answer.
“I don’t think I’m capable of loving anyone anymore,”
Those words struck Yamaguchi’s heart like a million knives. The truth was, he was slowly falling in love with (F/n). It wasn’t out of pity and sympathy for her situation. Rather, he fell in love with her resilience and never-changing kindness. He fell in love with the fact that no matter how wronged she was by the world, she never thought once to hurt it back. It takes so much strength to keep yourself from becoming the bad guy.
“What makes you say that?” Yamaguchi asked, wanting to know more.
(F/n) shifted, “How can I?” she said sadly, “The more pain I feel, the less love I start to feel, for myself and for others,”
Yamaguchi frowned. For once, he wanted to be selfish and beg for her to never lose her ability to love, just for his sake.
“I mean, who knows,” (F/n) shrugged, “Maybe one day, if the pain stops, I’ll finally be able to learn how to love again,” she looked at Yamaguchi, “But right now… I don’t think that’s possible,”
