The hospital room buzzed faintly with the sound of machines, a dim light casting long shadows across the floor.
Emelia stirred against the stiff white pillows, her face scrunching up as she came to.
"Hey, angel," Yaz said softly, brushing a stray lock of blonde hair from Emelia's face.
Emelia blinked again, her gaze settling on Kit last.
She smiled dreamily. "You're... gorgeous. Like, seriously, Kit, you could be in a museum."
Kit chuckled, brushing a hand gently through her hair. "Thank you, baby. You are too."
Yaz grinned from nearby. "You just relax, okay? We've got you."
Emelia let her eyes flutter closed, just for a second, feeling oddly peaceful despite the grogginess.
Emelia's eyelids fluttered again, and she whispered loudly enough for the whole room to hear, "I love you guys,"
Emelia said, voice thick but full of warmth. "If I were a snail, I'd still find you all."
Emelia suddenly sat up, wobbling precariously as she reached for the nurse's tray.
On it was a small cup with flavored ice chips.
The nurse smiled kindly. "Hi honey, I have some ice chips for you."
The blonde perked up.
Emelia's eyes immediately welled up with tears as she stared at the deep purple color.
"Grape?" she sniffled, voice cracking. "But... I was really hoping for blue raspberry..."
Kit leaned in, hopeful. "Do you have anything else?"
The nurse nodded. "Yeah, we have watermelon."
Emelia's lip trembled as tears ran down her cheeks, and she gave a small, apologetic "Yeah... please," still blinking back stray tears but calmer now.
Kit reached over and squeezed her hand. "See? Watermelon it is. We've got you."
She leaned back into the uncomfortable pillows. "Do these hospital gowns come in pink? Because if not, they should."
Yaz smiled softly, careful not to shift as Joe dozed off against her shoulder. "You're so cute."
