Taka stayed to play with his new hyena friends. It was just about sunset when Taka heard a piercing roar. A black and yellow shape jumped over the wall. His father! Mufasa must have told him where he was after he didn't come home. Ahadi tried to attack the pups, but Taka shouted to them. "Run!" The pups wasted no time. They ran for their parents. Ahadi turned to Taka.

"Why did you come here!?" He roared. "I warned every lion never to come here!" He swung his massive paw at Taka, but he dodged it, and ran behind a rock.

All of a sudden, The pups' mother rushed out and tackled Ahadi. The two fought brutally, but no blood was drawn. Ahadi snarled after knocking the mother to the ground. He swung his head toward the pups. "Don't EVER come near my son again! EVER!" The mother gathered her pups and ran.

Taka ran to his father. "How could you do that to my friends!?" He cried. Ahadi swung his head around and growled. But he stopped when he saw his son. He sighed. "Come, we have much to discuss."

Father and son made their way toward the top of Pride Rock. "Taka! Come here." Taka crawled toward his father, ears and body flattened. Ahadi turned toward his son.

"I'm very disappointed in you, Taka." Ahadi said softly. "You could have died. Why did you do it?" Taka started to cry. "I just wanted to prove myself to you. I felt like Mufasa was getting all the attention, so I wanted people to notice how brave I was."

Ahadi sighed. "Taka I know Mufasa has been getting a lot of attention. But he is to be king. And he can't be a king if he doesn't know how. And why can't you be happy for him? He is your brother. The only one who isn't lifting him up and supporting him is you. You above all lions. His own brother and best friend is not supporting him. Why is that?"

Taka stayed silent. He wanted to burst out and tell him that he wanted that crown. Or at least some attention from his own parent. He refused to talk, afraid of being hit again. "Answer me." Ahadi growled. Nothing. "I can't believe you." Growled Ahadi. "You've become such a self-centered, selfish cub. You want it all to be about you. Unbelievable."

Ahadi left for home. Taka stayed. He cried and cried all night. But also, at that moment, something snapped inside of him. Something changed.

His heart of gold had turned black
