Tanjiro Kamado moved through the blood-soaked mist of Mt. Fujikasane with deliberate, trembling steps. The trees loomed like silent sentinels, their twisted forms shrouded in fog and shadow, as if mourning the endless death that stained the soil beneath them. Every nerve in his body screamed. His legs felt like cracked stone—barely holding together—yet he pressed forward. His senses were on fire.
The mountain was alive with agony.
He could smell it all: the iron tang of blood, the ash of flesh torn apart, the sweat of frightened youths desperately fighting for their lives. Fear, grief, and rage hung thick in the air. From every direction, he could hear the chaos—swords clashing, footsteps stumbling, distant cries for help... and sometimes, silence. The kind that only follows a life snuffed out.
He'd just slain the Hand Demon—the monster responsible for the deaths of thirteen of Urokodaki-sensei's disciples. Thirteen bright souls, among them Sabito and Makomo, whose smiles and sorrow still haunted the edges of his memory. Their spirits could finally rest... but at what cost?
Blood seeped through his uniform. His arms were torn and bruised, his ribs ached with every breath. One misstep, one moment of weakness—and it came.
His knees buckled.
Tanjiro crashed to the forest floor with a thud, sending up a puff of dust and fallen petals. Pain bloomed in his chest, flaring sharp and raw.
He gasped, his fingers digging into the earth as if he could anchor himself to the world by sheer will alone.
"I have to move... I can't stop now...!" he thought desperately, struggling to lift himself with shaking arms. But his limbs screamed in protest. His body felt like it was unraveling from the inside out, his stomach twisting and stretching with searing pain.
