Merry belated Christmas!!! I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to get this chapter out. But just the epilogue is left at this point, and I'm gonna try to get that out on New Years for all of you guys as sort of a final farewell to this novel. So look forward to that. Much love to you all!
Chapter Fifteen
It was getting hard to tear my gaze away from him. Every time he moved, it was like my eyes were drawn to him. He knew it, too; I could see the smirk on his face every time he caught me looking. "Alright there, Andie?" he asked cheekily. I glared at him, subconsciously tugging on the ends of my skirt.
We were inside the building at 5 Pointz, gathered around a cluster of microphones like the one I had used for my performance at the Savoy. Now we were each stationed in front of one, listening to the hum of people gathering outside the building. The hum gradually turned into a dull roar, and then into excited screaming. People were chanting our names like some occult ritual.
Merritt checked his watch from my right. "It's seven."
Henley, on my left, glanced at me. She reached out and squeezed my hand briefly. "Ready for this?" I nodded. She dropped my hand and smiled at Danny. "Alright, Danny. You're up."
Merritt, Henley, and I fell silent, just watching Danny as he switched on the power on his microphone. His blue eyes went from the different knobs and buttons up to my face, holding my gaze before turning back to whatever he was doing before. My stomach flipped. He cleared his throat. "What is magic?"
Instantly, all the noise from outside the building died out. Danny's projection must have been on the side of the building like we had planned. If he was relieved about it, his expression didn't show. "Magic is deception, but deception designed to delight, to entertain, to inspire. It is about belief - "
Merritt switched on his microphone. " - faith - "
" - trust - " Henley had switched hers on.
I grinned and turned my on as well. " - and pixie dust." There was a collective laugh from our audience. I didn't have any other lines. I might as well own it.
Merritt went on. "Without those qualities, magic, as an art form, would no longer exist."
"But what happens if these qualities are not used for their higher purpose?" Henley squared her shoulders. "And instead, they're used to cheat, lie?"
Danny glanced at me again before speaking. "For person gain, or for greed? Well, then it's no longer magic."
"It's crime." Merritt's face was grim, but when I looked at him, he winked.
"So tonight, for our final act, you're gonna help us set a few things right."
After Henley's line, we switched off our microphones and looked at each other. My mind was almost spinning. This was it, this was really happening. In a few more minutes, our time as the Five Horsemen was going to be finished. I didn't think I could go back to being a solo act again. Hopefully, this thing with the Eye was legitimate.
Merritt was the first one to break the silence. "Showtime," he said. Danny snapped his fingers.
We walked out of the room, leaving the microphones where they stood. Let the FBI find them when they inevitably would come bursting into the room, ages after we'd already gone. It was too bad we couldn't stick around; I'd pay to see the look on Agent Rhode's face when he realizes that we've disappeared.
We headed for the elevator. Merritt and Henley were talking to each other in the front, leaving Danny to fall into step beside me. We were silent for a few moments as we reached to stairs leading upward to the elevator. The back of his hand brushed against mine, and, like a jolt of electricity had just touched my skin, I jerked my hand away. He acted as if nothing had happened and set a hand on my shoulder, then applied a little pressure to it, but not in a mean way. "This is really happening," he said, voicing my thought from earlier.
