I'm so sorry you've been waiting for this chapter for, like, ever. I've been going back and forth between Iowa and Minnesota so I can help my family get everything moved into our new house up north, and between that and trying to keep up with my junior year of high school at the same time, my time is limited. But this chapter is written now, so I hope you all forgive me. And, another announcement: this novel only has like three or four chapters left. We're nearing the end of the movie, after all. I've also been asked by a few people whether Darren is going to pop back up soon. Of course he is! Enjoy the chapter!
Chapter Thirteen
Someone snickering woke me up. "They have a habit of falling asleep together, don't they?" Henley's hushed voice said.
I snapped my eyes open and found that Danny was still clutching my hand. "Danny!" I screeched. "What the hell are you doing?"
His body jerked and his eyes flew open as he sat up off the floor. "What?" he mumbled sleepily. He tried to brush his hair out of his face before realizing his hand was holding mine a little too tightly. His blue eyes were the widest I'd ever seen them. "Oh."
I tried to yank my hand away from him, but for some reason his muscles clenched and he held fast to my fingers. "Danny," I snapped. "Let go of my hand. Now."
Danny's hand sprang open like it was on a hinge. Merritt was rubbing his chin. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you just call him Danny?"
I wiped my palm on my pants like I could scrape off the Danny germs. My eyes were narrowed in the mentalist's direction. "Why the hell does it matter what I call him? That's his name, isn't it?" My voice was cold. Danny was sheepishly getting to his feet and attempting to inch away from the area would I could easily hit him.
Merritt shrugged. "Well, it's just that you always call him Daniel. We've never heard you call him Danny before." He raised his eyebrows at Jack and Henley. All three of them folded their arms and looked Danny and I over.
"Is there something going on between you two that we should know about?" Jack asked, his expression one of extreme suspicion.
I scoffed. "Of course there isn't," I hissed. "Who the hell would want a relationship with him?"
Danny turned to me, looking wounded but also sort of pissed off. "Excuse me? Why would anyone think I'd want to be involved with a psycho bitch like you?"
"Says the guy who was holding my hand last night!"
He turned crimson and didn't respond. His blue eyes were narrowed and he wore a scowl as he moved his line of sight to the floor. Henley shifted her weight to her right leg; Jack scratched the back of his neck. Merritt looked up toward the ceiling. "Awkward," he said in a sing-song voice.
Henley cleared her throat. "We should probably be going. The police are bound to still be after us. The sooner we get back to New York, the better."
Jack and Merritt nodded in agreement and moved to the door, Henley leading them. Jack glanced over his shoulder at me. "Hey, is your ankle any better? Do you need help walking?"
I smiled at him, genuinely touched by his concern. "No, I think I'm all right. Just give me a couple minutes. If you hear a thud, that means I fell over and may need your assistance after all." He laughed and flashed me a smile before disappearing after Henley and Merritt.
My eyes sought out Danny, who was still staring at the floor a few feet away. "Somehow I always end up stuck with you, don't I?"
He huffed. "Like you don't enjoy being in my company."
