Chapter Seven

Danny was still complaining about his nose by the time we walked back into the theatre, over an hour after I’d left. Jack, Henley, and Merritt all turned toward us once we entered, their eyes widening when they spotted Danny.

Henley let out a gasp and ran forward. “Oh my God, Danny, are you all right?”

I rolled my eyes and went to stand with Jack and Merritt. “He’s fine. It’s not even broken.”

“What happened?” Henley asked, turning her big brown eyes to me.

I had to think fast. Of course I wasn’t going to tell them about what had happened with Darren; that much was obvious. But Danny’s nose? What was I supposed to say for that? I couldn’t exactly tell them that I thought he was trying to kiss me – which he totally was. Simple. Simple lies are always better. “He got mouthy with me, so I punched him,” I replied easily.

Henley frowned at me. “Andie, we’re three weeks away from our first show. You can’t just go around punching people when they make you angry. Violence is not the answer!”

“Yes, Mother,” I mumbled back, smirking slightly.

Henley merely sniffed in disdain at me, ignoring my retort. She turned back to Danny and rested her hands on either side of his face, turning his head from side to side to inspect the damage. His nose was still dripping blood, but it’d eased off a lot from how it was to start with. Henley clicked her tongue. “Aw, poor Danny. Does it hurt?”

“A little, but I’ll survive,” Danny answered. He pulled a fake, overly exaggerated grimace that Henley must have thought was real, as she glared over her shoulder at me before muttering something about “not understanding the fragile flower that was Daniel Atlas”. Or some sappy shit like that.

On either side of me, Merritt and Jack were pretending to throw up. Danny narrowed his eyes at them, but he quickly reverted back to making pained expressions whenever Henley started to look up from her inspection. Both men slapped me high fives behind my back.

“Well done,” Jack whispered. “Maybe that’ll knock him down a notch.”

Merritt leaned over so that his lips were right next to my ear. “Where’s my food?”

I burst out laughing in spite of myself, drawing Henley’s attention away from Danny’s nose, to which he looked increasingly upset. Jack was doubled over on my right, shaking from his giggles. Merritt just smiled as I wrapped one arm around him with another chuckle. “Priorities, Merritt,” I snorted. “You’ve definitely got them.”

oOoOo

Three weeks later, I was sitting on the counter in Henley and I’s dressing room. The guys were in there with us as well, lounging in different spots around the room. Henley was still getting ready, forty-five minutes after I had already finished. I was decked out in tight black pants with a loose white shirt and fitted black blazer. Plain black heels made me a few inches taller. My usual fedora rested on top of my dark curls like it was just any other day.

I swung my leg back and forth, trailing my toe along the carpet while my other leg was tucked underneath my body. Jack was watching me; Danny was doing everything in his power not to. Merritt was eating Cheetos out of the bag I’d smuggled inside for him, turning his fingers orange.
