Chapter Five
A few months later, we were hot on Étienne’s trail. Turns out he wasn’t planning on coming to America at all; I certainly got an earful from Danny after that. No, he was staying right there in France instead, which only made our job ten times more difficult. And that was probably my fault.
Now, in addition to my claustrophobia issues, I also had a problem with flying. And, yes, more people die in car accidents than plane crashes, but that didn’t help me any. Flying over the ocean didn’t make matters any better. Neither did Danny making me take the window seat, damn him.
We were flying in doubles in coach. Jack sat by himself, and Henley and Merritt were side by side, leaving Danny and I to suffer each other’s company. He rolled his eyes every time he looked my way, probably because I had the death grip on both armrests, my eyes were clenched shut, and I was breathing heavily.
“You know, if you’d stop acting childish, we could be planning what we’re going to do once we land in Paris,” Danny muttered, throwing me another hateful look.
I dug my red lacquered nails deeper into the upholstery. “You know, if you keep looking at me like that, I’m going to break your face.”
“So much violence,” he replied. I heard him shift in his seat, probably to face away from me.
Satisfied that he wasn’t going to keep pestering me, I refocused my thoughts on images of fire and death and destruction, as well as sharks and a watery grave. What can I say; I wasn’t the happiest person in the world in that moment. I could have tracked Étienne just fine back home in New York from the safety of my recliner. But, no; I had to suffer through an anxiety attack because Danny was punishing me for my slipup.
Speaking of Danny… “I didn’t realize you were so terrified of planes,” he said conversationally, turning back to me. My silence must really have been killing him.
“Yes, you did. I told you a thousand times on the taxi ride to the airport that I’m afraid of flying,” I retorted, snapping open my eyes to glare at him. “That’s why you made me sit by the window for the whole eight hour flight, you twat.”
He laughed. “Oh, yeah, that’s right. I remember now.”
“I hate you, Danny.”
He smirked. “But you’re calling me Danny, so I know you’re lying.”
I sighed and pried my hands off the armrests, stretching out my aching fingers. Man, fear really made your knuckles sore. "Whatever. I'm too freaked out to argue with you right now."
"It's like eleven at night right now, Andie. Why don't you take a nap or something?" Danny continued, completely ignoring me.
I gave him a long look before deciding that was probably the best thing for me to do. I squirmed in my seat, trying to get comfortable. "Wake me when it's over," I told him. I leaned my head against the window, doing my best to avoid looking at the ocean as I closed my eyes.
oOoOo
"Hey, sleepyhead, the ride is over. Time to wake up now," someone said, tapping their finger against my head. I assumed it was Jack.
I mumbled something incoherent and snuggled my face further into my pillow. It'd been a nice nap. The flight attendant must have gotten me a pillow, because I didn't remember falling asleep with one.
