Chapter Eight... The Halfway Mark
I had an appointment the first day of my twentieth week of pregnancy, and this one I was pretty excited for. Because apart from seeing my baby again, I would finally get to know if my baby was a boy or a girl. And I had been wanting to know ever since I found out I was pregnant.
"You should come with me, Kent!" I said excitedly as I sat eating breakfast that morning.
"I have classes all day, Paige," he sighed. "And I can't miss these ones. I'm already behind."
"I just love having appointments all by myself," I frowned. "Sam's always working, so even he can't come!"
"If you told your parents, or even your sister, you wouldn't have to go alone," Kent reminded me. "But you chose to hide your pregnancy from your parents. What's gonna happen when the baby's here? You gonna hide him from them, too?"
"Well, that's the bonus of living far away from them," I smiled weakly. "I don't have to tell them."
"You have to tell them," he frowned. "This isn't something you keep from the people who love you. Especially since you're hiding a person."
"Kent... We've talked about this. I can't tell them!"
"Then don't complain when you have to go to a doctor's appointment alone."
"Fine!"
I bitterly finished my cereal but then I was over our little argument. I finished getting ready after Kent left for school. I walked to the subway and rode to the city. I found the obstetrician easily, and walked inside the large building.
"Hello, I have an appointment with... uh... Dr Escrow," I said, reading the name off of a card.
"Name, please?" the receptionist asked, not looking up.
"Paige Curtis," I replied.
"Oh, yes," she smiled, finally looking at me. "You're Dr Escrow's new patient. I recognise the name. You were sent here after your original OB moved away, right?"
"Yes," I smiled.
"She's ready to see you," the receptionist smiled. "You're her first patient today."
It must be the first time I haven't had to wait in a waiting room before an appointment. I happily followed a nurse down to the back room where the doctor already was, awaiting my arrival. This was odd, too. Oh, well, I thought.
"Hello, Miss Curtis," Dr Escrow spoke softly. "I'm your new obstetrician. Come in. We'll see how everything's going, yeah?"
"Hi, yes," I muttered quickly, walking into the room. I changed into a gown and then laid down.
After a few minutes I could hear the baby's heartbeat.
"Well, everything's looking perfect," Dr Escrow smiled as my eyes fixed themselves on the screen. "Are you interested in knowing the sex of the baby? I have a clear view at the moment."
"Yes, I would," I smiled.
"It's a little girl," she told me, and my smile widened.
"I knew it," I breathed.
