Chapter Seventeen... Happiness, Finally

Changes came to our household after Kent and I finally became a couple.

The first thing I did the morning after we first got together, I made sure I went on the pill. As nice as it would be to have a child with Kent, we had Lucy, and I'd been told that in the first few months after giving birth it's easy to fall pregnant. Couldn't imagine having another baby at this point in time, and Kent agreed.

My seven week old daughter was a happy child, and I loved her. Watching her grow was amazing!

But the biggest change we made was that I moved into Kent's bedroom. We moved my bed into his room, painted my bedroom pink, and Lucy got my old room to herself. Kent's bed was stored downstairs in the garage, because we didn't think it would be smart to get rid of it.

By the time Lucy was three months old, life was moving way too fast.

"I can't believe that she's three months old now!" I wailed one morning. "Soon she'll be walking and talking... and we'll be finished college and looking forward to the future!"

"Lucky Lucy's sound asleep in the next room," Kent snickered. "Or else you'd wake her up."

"Wouldn't be the first time," I rolled my eyes.

"Think Luce just sleeps through your ranting now, doesn't she?" he laughed.

"Oh, you're mean," I giggled, tackling him on the bed. "Did I ever mention how much I love waking up to you every morning?"

"I believe you've said that... all the time," he kissed my cheek. "But now I have to get up. I have a class in an hour, and well, then I have to be back here at three so that you can go to your classes tonight."

"Oh, yeah," I recalled, frowning.

I got up and made breakfast for both Kent and I, and we ate, talking about our lives after college. Kent really wanted to be a doctor, and he'd been doing pre med courses for a long time now. And it would be great, for both of us. He also wanted to be a father figure for Lucy, which wasn't hard because he already was.

After Kent left, Lucy woke up. I got her up and gave her some breakfast before I dressed her and myself, and we went to central park. I know Kent didn't like me coming here, but here was where I felt happy when Kent was in classes, and it was a beautiful sunny day.

I sat down on one of the benches, and a familiar voice sounded.

"Well, well, well... Paige Curtis. Motherhood suits you, you know."

I hadn't seen Sally since before I had Lucy, so it was nice of her to take a seat next to me.

"How have you been, Sal?" I asked, smiling.

"I could ask you the same thing," she grinned. "Oh, my! Doesn't your daughter look like you. What's her name again?"

"Lucy," I answered, gently running my finger along her cheek. "She's three months old now, and she's already been on a plane, and met her grandparents, her aunts and uncles, and her cousins!"

"But she still hasn't met her father, has she?" Sally questioned sadly.

"No," I sighed. "I don't think she'll ever meet him."

"He was in the city over Christmas for a couple of days," she informed me. "Came to our house... Fred could have beat the life out of him, if he didn't have a broken ankle and could hardly walk. Some words were said, but you know. Ramone seemed oblivious to the fact that he was a father. Doesn't seem to care. And he's got a new girlfriend."

"Why does that not surprise me?" I frowned. "Although... I have a new boyfriend."

"That's great! What's his name?"

"Kent."

"As in your gay best friend?"

"He's bi. But uh... not gay at the moment."

"Wasn't he with Sam, your other roommate?"

"Sam cheated on him, and they broke up. But they were always fighting. I didn't tell my parents about Lucy until she was two weeks old, and Sam hated that I kept it from them. If Kent defended me, they would fight. And then we kissed, just before I went into labour. And Kent told Sam... anyway, Kent's amazing. And we know a lot about each other, so it's easy. And he's... well, he's the guy I always wanted to be with."

"Well, that's great. I hoped that happiness would find you soon enough again, Paige."

"So uh... what's Ramone's new girlfriend like?"

"She's almost anorexic, she's that skinny. And she has red hair that makes her look trashy. I don't get what he sees in her, but mostly, I don't get what she sees in him! She knows what he did, though! And she still wants to be with him! It's wrong!"

"I know, but I'm over him. I think I was over him the day I got back to New York, after visiting my parents. And I could regret being with him, and hope that Kent and I would be together anyway."

"Of course you would, baby girl. Kent has always liked you from what Fred says."

"How does Fred know Kent?"

"Well, I don't really know. Think they've hung out after class a few times. Nothing big."

Sally was always easy to talk to. Lucy caught my attention then by making noise, and I pulled her out of the pram.

"Do you want to hold her?" I asked.

"Sure!" Sally's face lit up. "She's adorable."

Lucy was willing to go to anybody who wanted her. One of the things I loved about her the most. She was an attention-seeker, for sure. Sally looked so natural with a baby, so I had to ask.

"So Sal," I began, grinning. "When's it your turn?"

"My turn for what?" Sally asked.

"To become a mommy," I smiled.

"Oh," she chuckled. "I don't know. But let's just say this... little Lucy here is making me clucky. I guess I'm more ready than I'd like to admit."

"So... eventually?" I asked.

"Hopefully in the next few months, given that Fred and I decided to start trying," she whispered. "But we only decided yesterday, so it's a secret at the moment. We thought it would be perfect, because we'd be finished school by the time the baby's born, no matter what."

"It really is the best thing," I smiled proudly.

"Well, let's just say Ramone and his new girlfriend will probably never have kids," she chuckled. "He'd be the world's worst father."

"He already is," I frowned.

"Well, I have to go," she sighed. "Fred's waiting for me somewhere here. Better go find him."

"It was good to see you again, Sal," I smiled warmly.

"You too, Paigey," she hugged me before she handed Lucy back to me. I waved goodbye before I returned home.

Once I'd had lunch and done the last on my assignment, I played with Lucy until Kent got home. Then I had to leave with barely a hi or a bye. But we were used to this.

It wasn't long now really until college was over for the both of us. Where we went after that? Well, we didn't know yet.

Taking each day as it comes. Yep. That's us.
