The summer morning sun poured into the room through half-drawn curtains, casting golden light across the cozy hardwood floor of your shared bedroom. You sat at the edge of the bed, one hand on your still-small bump, the other clutching Drew's fingers tightly. He sat beside you, lacing your fingers together like he always did when you were anxious, thumb gently brushing over the back of your hand.
"You ready?" he asked softly, his ocean-blue eyes studying your face like he could will all your nerves away.
"As I'll ever be," you exhaled with a small, nervous smile. The truth was, you were excited—but scared too. This was your fourth week going in for early pregnancy checkups, and every time they checked, everything looked fine. But that didn't stop your heart from worrying. From wondering. From overthinking.
Drew stood up and helped you to your feet, pressing a soft kiss to your temple. "Everything's going to be okay. God's got us."
You nodded, trying to believe it the way he did.
⸻
The clinic was quiet today. Cold air hummed from the vents above, and the faint sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway as you both sat in the room, waiting. The white walls were covered with smiling baby photos and thank-you cards from other families, proof that good things happened here.
You laid back on the ultrasound table as the tech, a kind woman named Natalie, came in with her usual warm smile. "Hey again, Mama and Dad. Let's take a look, shall we?"
You lifted your shirt as Drew held your hand, his other hand gently rubbing circles on your arm. You watched the screen intently, heart pounding. Natalie squirted the cold gel onto your belly and pressed the probe down gently.
There was silence.
Natalie moved the wand, adjusting the angle slightly. Then again. You tried to read her face, but suddenly—her smile faltered. Just barely, but it was enough.
Your heart dropped.
Natalie's brows pulled together, her eyes locked on the screen.
"Is something wrong?" Drew asked, voice tight with concern.
You swallowed the lump in your throat. "Aren't we supposed to be hearing something?" you whispered.
Natalie paused. She looked at you, then at Drew. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Starkey... but there is no heartbeat."
Your entire world stopped.
"What?" The word came out barely above a breath, breaking like a glass teacup in your throat.
Drew froze beside you. "What does that mean? Is it—could it still be too soon?"
Natalie hesitated. "It's possible. Sometimes the baby can be in a position where it's hard to detect. But given how far along we are... it's not likely."
You blinked, tears spilling silently from your eyes as your hand instinctively moved over your belly. Drew wrapped his arms around you, pulling your head against his chest. You could feel his heart pounding wildly through his shirt.
"Can we come back and check again next week?" he asked, voice strained.
"Of course," Natalie nodded gently. "Sometimes miracles happen."
You could tell even she didn't quite believe what she was saying, but you appreciated it anyway.
⸻
The ride home was silent.
You sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window, watching the world pass by like it wasn't even real. You didn't speak. Neither did Drew. He kept one hand on the wheel and one resting protectively on your leg, his thumb moving back and forth.
When you got home, you walked straight to the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed, just as you had that morning—but everything was different now. You looked at the wall like it could give you answers. You could barely breathe.
"God..." you whispered, your voice cracking. "Please... don't take this baby from us."
Drew came in and sat beside you, slipping his hand into yours again.
"I don't understand," you cried softly. "I've prayed for this baby. We've thanked You every day. Why would You let this happen?"
You broke.
Drew pulled you into his arms, rocking you gently as the sobs poured out of you. Then you felt his grip tighten as he pressed his lips to your temple.
"Let's pray," he whispered. "Right now."
So you did.
You both fell to your knees beside the bed, hands joined tightly. He led the prayer, his voice shaking but strong.
"God, we don't understand. But we believe You are good. We believe You are a miracle worker. We're asking You to bring life to our baby. We're asking You for a heartbeat. A strong one. We're asking for healing, protection, and peace that only You can give. We trust You, even when it hurts."
You added through your tears, "Please, Jesus... save our baby. Please..."
You prayed longer that night than you ever had in your life. You didn't even know how to stop—you just cried out with everything you had.
⸻
One week later.
You returned to the same room, the same white walls, the same familiar scent of hand sanitizer and hope.
Your heart felt like it could shatter any second. Drew held your hand tighter than usual, his thumb trembling now as he rubbed your palm. Natalie came in, her smile cautious this time.
"No matter what we see or don't see today," Drew whispered, "God is still good."
You nodded, your throat too tight to speak.
Natalie got started quickly. She didn't say much this time. Just adjusted the wand. Moved it. Paused.
Then—
thump-thump. thump-thump. thump-thump.
It was faint at first, but then louder. Stronger. Rhythmic.
Your eyes widened as Natalie gasped.
"Oh my goodness... there it is."
You didn't speak. You couldn't. You just stared at the screen with tears welling in your eyes, heart bursting.
"That's a strong heartbeat," she said with amazement. "A really strong one."
You burst into sobs, covering your mouth. Drew leaned in and kissed your forehead, his own eyes brimming with tears.
"Thank You, Jesus," he whispered. "Thank You..."
You looked at the screen again, the sound of that beautiful heartbeat echoing in the room like the answer to every desperate prayer you'd whispered that week.
Natalie wiped her eyes too, laughing softly. "I don't know how to explain it. But I'm so, so happy for you both."
You smiled through your tears. "We prayed. Every night. We begged God..."
She smiled back, touched. "Well, this baby is already a miracle."
⸻
That night, you and Drew lay in bed, your head resting on his chest, your hand over your belly. The house was quiet, but your heart was finally at peace.
"God heard us," you whispered.
"He always does," Drew said, kissing your forehead. "Even when it feels like He's silent."
You didn't know what the rest of the journey would look like. You didn't know if there would be more bumps in the road. But you knew one thing now more than ever—
Miracles do happen. And this little heartbeat... was yours.
