Drew Starkey had always been protective of his little sister, Y/N. At 16, she was smart, kind, and a little sassy — a combination that made her both lovable and slightly dangerous when she wanted to be. As the much older brother, Drew had always seen it as his personal responsibility to keep an eye on her. Not in a smothering way, but just... you know, big brother duties.

So when he came home one weekend to North Carolina for a family barbecue, he expected the usual — good food, inside jokes, and Y/N constantly glued to her phone, rolling her eyes at his jokes. What he didn't expect was a secret.

"Hey, Drew!" their mom called from the kitchen. "Y/N and Walker are going to be a little late."

Drew paused. "Walker?"

"Yeah, Walker Scobell," his mom said casually, slicing tomatoes. "You know, the actor? From Percy Jackson? They've been spending a lot of time together lately. He's a sweetheart."

Drew blinked. "Wait. Walker Scobell? Like, the Walker Scobell?"

Their dad chimed in from the living room. "Yeah. The one your sister's dating."

Drew nearly choked on the sweet tea he'd just sipped. "Dating?"

His mom froze. "Oh no... you didn't know?"

"No, I didn't know!" Drew exclaimed, setting his cup down and standing straighter. "Since when does my baby sister date anyone, let alone some Hollywood kid?"

"He's a really good kid, Drew," his mom assured, placing a hand on his arm. "Very respectful."

Drew ran a hand through his hair. "Respectful doesn't mean he gets to date my little sister and not tell me."

Just then, the front door opened and in walked Y/N — cheeks slightly flushed, wearing a denim jacket Drew didn't recognize — and right behind her was Walker Scobell, hands in his pockets, nervously chewing the inside of his cheek.

"Hey, guys!" Y/N chirped, smiling like she hadn't just been outed by her own mother.

Drew folded his arms. "Hey, Y/N. Walker."

Walker's smile faltered. "Hey, Drew. Um... good to see you."

"Funny," Drew said dryly, "since apparently you've been seeing someone in my family for a while now."

Y/N's face went pale. "Oh my god. Mom told you?"

"She did," Drew said, raising an eyebrow. "Care to explain?"

Y/N sighed and stepped forward. "Look, I was going to tell you. I just... I didn't want you to freak out."

"Why would I freak out?" Drew asked, narrowing his eyes at Walker. "Is there something to freak out about?"

Walker gulped. "No, sir. I mean—no. Not at all. I really like Y/N. A lot. And I respect her. And your family."

"Don't 'sir' me," Drew said, trying to hold back a smirk. "You're not meeting my dad."

"You already met him," their dad called out with a laugh.

Y/N crossed her arms. "Drew, seriously. We're not doing anything crazy. We hang out, we go to movies, we get ice cream. It's chill."

Drew looked between them — Y/N with her determined eyes and Walker looking like he was sweating through his shirt.

Finally, Drew sighed and softened. "Okay. Okay. I'm not mad. I just... I wish you told me. I wanna be in your life, you know?"

Y/N smiled, stepping forward to hug him. "I know. I just... wanted to keep it to myself for a little bit."

"You're my baby sister," Drew mumbled into her hair. "And if he breaks your heart, I'm calling Liam Neeson."

Walker laughed nervously. "Fair."

Drew pulled back and eyed Walker again, this time with a smirk. "Alright, Percy Jackson. Welcome to the family."

Walker beamed. "Thanks, man."

As the barbecue sizzled outside and the sun dipped lower, Drew sat with his little sister and her (now officially acknowledged) boyfriend. He still wasn't entirely over the shock, but one look at Y/N's glowing face told him what he needed to know.

She was happy. And as long as she was happy — and as long as Walker kept that goofy, terrified look whenever Drew raised an eyebrow — everything would be just fine.
