The soft rustle of the sheets was the only sound in the quiet honeymoon suite, lit by the warm golden glow of the bedside lamp. The air was thick with the scent of roses from Y/N's bouquet, now laid gently across the vanity. Everything felt like a dream — from the ceremony to the way Rafe had looked at her when she walked down the aisle. But nothing compared to this moment now, the stillness that followed the most intimate experience of their lives.
Y/N lay nestled against Rafe's chest, her cheek pressed just above his heart, which still beat a little too fast. He wrapped both arms around her, pulling her close like she was the most fragile, precious thing in the world — and to him, she was.
Neither of them had spoken yet. Not because it was awkward, but because the silence was sacred. A moment just for them. Firsts weren't always easy, but this one had been filled with love — unpracticed, but honest. Their breathing slowly matched, and Rafe kissed the top of her head.
"You okay?" he asked, his voice low and soft, the kind of tone he only ever used with her.
Y/N nodded, then whispered, "Yeah... are you?"
He let out a breathy laugh, half from relief, half from disbelief. "I don't think I've ever been more okay."
She tilted her head up and looked at him, and his blue eyes found hers — filled with something new. Not just love. Adoration. Reverence.
"You're amazing," he said, brushing her hair behind her ear. "You were so... brave."
Y/N smiled, cheeks warm. "You were too."
Rafe reached over to the nightstand and pulled the blanket over her shoulders, tucking it gently around her. "Let me clean you up a little," he murmured.
She nodded shyly, and he slipped from the bed, grabbing a warm, damp cloth he'd prepared earlier. Rafe moved slowly, reverently, taking care to be gentle. As he cleaned her, he kissed her knee, then her shoulder. "Tell me if anything hurts, okay?"
"It doesn't," she whispered. "You're taking such good care of me."
He paused, looking at her with such intense love that it made her heart ache. "Of course I am. You're my wife."
Once he was done, he climbed back into bed, wrapping her in his arms again. This time, he pulled her half onto his chest, like he wanted her closer than ever before. "I still can't believe you're mine," he said quietly, tracing patterns on her bare back with his fingertips.
"I've always been yours," she replied, eyes fluttering closed. "Even before tonight."
Rafe smiled into her hair, holding her tighter. "You make me want to be good. Better. Always."
"You are good," she murmured, drowsy and safe.
That night, they didn't fall asleep right away. They whispered little things — about the day, about how nervous he'd been seeing her in that dress, about how her hands had trembled when he kissed her at the altar. And later, when sleep did finally come, it wasn't just rest. It was peace.
Because they had found it — in each other.
Forever started tonight.
