The summer shine shines bright as the smell of a barbecue fills the vast yard, which is filled with frisbees, lawn darts, croquet, and other amusements.
A garden shed off to the side, with various tools and gardening items, sat clearly being used while the weather was nice. A table set up with food and drinks was just a little ways from the barbecue, and everyone sat around it, smiling and happy.
"Would you like some wine?" Mrs. Gibbons offers a warm and polite smile as she looks at Kimberly and Thomas, who are sitting opposite each other at the end of the table.
"No, I think I'll stick to our beer, thanks." The brunette smiles gratefully at the older woman; the fact that she's here right now is a miracle, and her attitude reflects her appreciation for her life.
"This is really great, Mrs. Gibbons." Thomas beams at the older woman politely.
Kimberly picks up where he ends with a smile of her own, something that seems easier now than it did five months ago. "Thank you so much for inviting us."
"It's our pleasure." The Gibbons matriarch says warmly, as Kimberly's father, Michael, smiles at her in return, clearly happy that his daughter is safe and everything is normal once again.
"How are you doing, Kimberly?" Mr. Gibbons questions the woman from his spot in between her and her father.
The brunette blinks but nods softly. "Good. Yeah. I had a fun summer. I don't know, I guess things are pretty much getting back to normal." she says, equally as happy to move on despite still grieving for everyone.
A silent beat passes as Kimberly and Thomas share a look. No one will ever understand what they went through together. "Brian, I think you better go check that barbecue." Mrs. Gibbons says to her son, clearing the awkwardness away.
Brian gives a small laugh as he sees the smoke. He gets up just as Thomas takes a bite of his shish-kabob and accidentally bumps him. The metal skewer almost jabbed the police officer in the mouth.
"Hey, careful. Those things are dangerous." Michael warns with a small, concerned smile.
"Trust me. I think I've been through closer calls." Thomas jokes after quickly pulling the sharp meat road away from his mouth.
Brian nods excitedly, patting Thomas on the arm as he motions to his dad while walking backward to go to the barbecue. "Yeah, me too. Dad, you should tell them about the news van thing."
"What's that?" Kimberly frowns, glancing at Brian's dad.
"Well, Brian was almost hit by that news van that day in the field, and your friend Rory pulled him back at the last second. Saved his life." Mr. Gibbons explains with a grateful smile.
Kimberly and Thomas ominously turn their heads around to watch as
Brian fidgets in front of the barbecue. The wind picks up suddenly despite being a warm and sunny day.
