Chapter Forty-One: All Dressed Up With Somewhere To Go
I occupy myself by blowing a strand of perfect curled hair out of my face over and over as Sutton continues grooming me. I don't know what I did wrong in my past life but whatever it was, I deeply apologize. This whole process has been taking hours and up to this point I'm not seeing a light at the end of tunnel.
The past week has been nothing short of a hassle. Store after store looking for a prom dress and not finding anything that didn't made me look like Disney puked on me. Eventually Carla just took my wardrobe under her own control and told me she could find something for me. It was a relief to say the least.
I haven't actually seen my dress and to be honest I don't care. That's my personal Prom theme at this point. I really honestly don't care. The only reason I'm going to this meat parade is because of Lou's puppy dog face. Otherwise I'd be sitting at home, watching Netflix and maybe ordering Chinese food. My mouth waters at the idea of some cream cheese wantons being mine for the taking.
Sutton suddenly flicks my ear and I jerk upright and out of my thoughts. She's been left in charge of doing my hair and makeup while Carla has been busy doing...I don't know what. I assume it has something to do with my dress but lord knows what that entails. Maybe some kind of Virgin sacrifice.
"Pay attention." Sutton orders with a glare reflected in the mirror before us.
I scowl back at her as I grumble, "To what? You're the one wielding the burning wand of pain."
"Exactly why you should be alert. Don't you think?" She says with a smirk.
I sigh heavily, "Why can't I just wear my hair like I normally do?"
"As I've told you a million times Emmy, it's all about the experience."
"I don't want the experience," I whine, "I just want to get it over and done with."
"If that's going to your attitude the whole time I swear to god I'll burn you."
"A burning would almost be preferable."
Sutton unfurls another strand of hair from the curling iron as she responds flatly, "You're being dramatic. It honestly isn't that bad. Besides, you'll be going with Lou and I'll be there."
I give her a fake confused look, "Is that supposed to make me want to go?"
She pulls a strand of hair, "Brat."
"Ow," I whine at her with a pout, "I was kidding."
"Sure you were."
"To be fair though I've been blackmailed into every step of this misadventure," I tell her as she continues doing my hair.
"Blackmailed..." She muses, "Not the term I'd use...purposeful distraction maybe."
"Distraction," I repeat sullenly, "From what?"
Sutton grabs my shoulders and makes me look at her in the mirror which I've been avoiding tactfully since we started this procedure. I look pale and my eyes have dark circles under them. I know what she means of course. I've been out of it since the hospital visit a few weeks ago with my dad. I haven't heard anything from him and I haven't been call to check on him either.
I don't know what he's thinking telling me to just leave him alone. I don't know if he's doing this for my sake or his. I don't know if he's just sick of dealing with me. I don't know if he really does hate me. To be honest, he may be my father but I don't know him or how his mind works. All I do know is that doing what he wants just this once may be the best thing for us as individuals. I've been hurt too much by this bullshit to want to dwell on it anymore.
