Five months later
"I bet you it's a girl, I can tell from all the signs," Khairiya said, spritzing her face with setting spray. She and Laila had been arguing for the past ten minutes about the gender of their cousin's baby, both too excited about the upcoming baby shower and gender reveal to think straight.
"You know what? I give up," Laila said, throwing her hands up. "She won't be pregnant forever, right?"
Khairiya rolled her eyes, smiling. Her gaze shifted to Kaltoom, who was fast asleep on the bed. "Laila, wake her up. I'm done," she said, slipping on her veil.
Just then, the door opened. "Salaam," came Adyan's voice as he walked in with a white paper bag and the mouthwatering aroma of pizza filling the room.
"For my wife," he said proudly, grinning.
Laila and Khairiya exchanged teasing looks. "Let her sleep, please," Adyan added gently, sitting beside Kaltoom. "She didn't sleep well last night."
But before he could finish, a sleepy voice mumbled, "Don't worry, I'm already up."
Kaltoom sat up, rubbing her eyes, and Adyan opened his arms. She leaned into him, and he kissed her forehead softly.
"Ewww, you two have no shame," Laila groaned.
Kaltoom laughed and threw a pillow at her.
"We're going to be late, Ya Ady, please let's go!" Khairiya said, fastening her heels.
Adyan smiled. "We aren't going anywhere until my wife eats." He gave Kaltoom a playful nose kiss.
Khairiya sighed dramatically. "Oh God, I hate you guys! Laila, let's go. When they're done being lovey-dovey, he can bring her himself!"
The girls left, laughing, and the room fell quiet.
Adyan turned to Kaltoom, his eyes full of affection. "You okay, baby?"
"Mhmm," she whispered, resting her head on his chest.
A heartbeat later, his lips found hers slow, warm, and full of love. The world outside faded. For a moment, there was nothing but them the rhythm of their hearts and the soft hum of the AC.
When they pulled away, Adyan smiled. "I love you," he said softly. "More than I can ever say."
Kaltoom touched his face gently. "I love you too."
He smiled again, brushing his thumb against her cheek. "Good. Now let's get my wife something to eat."
He handed her a slice of pizza, and she took a few bites before wrinkling her nose. "Adyyy... I don't want it anymore," she said, pouting.
He frowned. "You okay?"
Before he could ask further, she rushed to the bathroom. Adyan followed, holding her hair back as she threw up. When she was done, he helped her wash her face and guided her back to bed.
His tone turned serious, though still gentle. "We're going to see a doctor. Now."
⸻
The doctor's words felt like music to their ears: "Congratulations.. you're pregnant."
For a second, both of them just stared. Then Adyan's face broke into the widest grin imaginable.
"We're having a baby?" he asked in disbelief, his voice trembling.
Kaltoom nodded, tears in her eyes.
Adyan pulled her into his arms, lifting her off her feet. "Alhamdulillah! I'm going to be a dad!" he said, spinning her around as she laughed through her tears.
The joy was overwhelming pure, contagious, and beautiful. In that moment, their love felt even more real, stronger than ever.
As they left the hospital, Adyan couldn't stop smiling. "Can we please tell everyone?" he begged.
Kaltoom chuckled. "Not yet. Let's keep it our little secret for now."
He sighed dramatically but agreed. "Fine. But I'm bursting, wallahi."
At the baby shower later that evening, they tried to keep their secret. Laila, sharp as ever, noticed Kaltoom glowing and leaned in suspiciously. "You look extra radiant today. What's going on?"
Kaltoom laughed nervously. "Nothing! Just happy for Aisha."
Laila squinted. "Hmm. We'll see about that."
⸻
On their way home, Adyan reached over and laced his fingers through hers. The evening sun painted everything golden as the car hummed quietly along the road.
Kaltoom rested her head on his shoulder, smiling softly.
Adyan glanced down at her, heart swelling. "We're going to be amazing parents," he whispered.
Kaltoom looked up, eyes glistening. "We already are," she said.
He kissed her soft, slow, full of promise.
In that moment, surrounded by love, laughter, and new beginnings, they both knew whatever the future held, they would face it together.
Alhamdulillah.
Alhamdulillah.
Alhamdulillah.
The End. 🤍
