"Aren't you lonely?" His mom asked with an inhaled sigh. "You don't even try to communicate with people anymore, so it seems."

"I'm not lonely mom," He said, no anger in his voice, only compassion. "I only need me in life. Who could I trust more?"

"You could learn to trust other people." His mom mumbled loudly. "You're going to go through some hard times in your life sooner or later, and you can get confused, caught in something you don't want, but think you want." She swallowed, taking in everything she was saying herself. "Our minds can play tricks on us, lead us in the wrong direction, and you're gonna need someone else to smack some sense into ya when I'm not there."

They both laughed lightly.

"Just please," She pleaded, exasperated and tired from thinking about the future. "promise me you'll understand what I'm saying and take my words to heart, promise me that no matter what, you will have somebody to take care of you when you can't do it yourself, because I don't want anything bad to happen to you, or anybody ever. Promise me you'll pass this along to people, to help them on their life's journey, because everyone deserves a chance in life, and I'd hate for people to waste it like I did."
