A Strange Awakening: Chapter Five:
I opened my eyes to a dark room, feeling as if my throat was on fire. I knew I needed something to drink, so I climbed out of bed, and went out into the house to find Adrian.
I was glad he had been able to make the pain go away. I’d have to thank him for that, and see what he knew about my illness.
I looked into his study, but didn’t see him sitting in his chair by the fire. Instead, he stood looking out of the massive window behind his desk.
“Adrian, where’s Jack?” was the first thing that I asked.
“In another part of the house, with my house keeper Maria.” He said softly.
“Could you tell me where your water glasses are? I’m a little thirsty.” I said quickly.
“Yes, but I’m afraid you won’t be drinking water.” That didn’t sound so bad, maybe he had wine instead.
“Okay.” I smiled at him, and followed him out of his study and down the hallway.
“How was your rest, Cecilia? Do you feel well?” he questioned me as we walked down several hallways.
“I feel fine. Better actually. Thank you for making the pain go away.” I said happily.
“I didn’t make it go away, the venom in your blood did.” That was another weird thing to say.
“What venom? You didn’t leave anything in me when you drank from me!” I said sternly thinking that he was going to start blaming himself for my illness.
“Not the first time I didn’t. The second time I did. I had to do it to save you; I had taken too much blood the first time. The venom was the only way that you could stay alive.” He bowed his head.
I didn’t know what to say. I wasn’t sure on how I should be acting. Should I be angry at him for changing me into something I barely understood? Should I appreciate the fact that he saved me?
“I’m a vampire?” I whispered.
“I did it for Jack, and me, and you! Jack needs his family. I need you, and you need your life. I had to save you!” he yelled suddenly.
I was speechless and afraid by his outburst.
“Adrian, I-“ he cut me off.
“Understand me, Cecilia; I would not have done it, had there been another way.” He said in a gruff voice.
I looked at him closely, trying to understand why he needed me, but I couldn’t figure it out.
“Where can I find Baby Jack?” I questioned.
“You cannot find him, Cecilia. You haven’t fed. Do you know what you’d do to him when you hear his pulse beating in his veins? I’m not going to let you do that to him!” Now I understood why he had sent Baby Jack to the other side of the house.
“Fine, help me feed then, and then I want to go see my brother!” I said sounding exhausted, and frustrated.
“Come with me.” He said as we stopped out front of the kitchen door.
I followed him inside, and saw that he had someone sitting in one of the chairs near his table.
What was weird though, I could hear their pulse, and that made my throat burn worse than it already was. Something was going on inside my body, and it was telling me to attack this person.
I felt Adrian grab my arm and pull me back. I fought him.
Adrian drug me outside of the kitchen, went back in, and closed the door in my face. My body wanted to tear it down and go back in there; my mind wanted me to run. I didn’t understand what was happening to me, and why I wanted to attack that man, but I knew that I shouldn’t go back in there.
I heard Adrian talking to the man, but I couldn’t make out what they were saying. It also sounded like someone had sliced into meat with a knife, which was weird because I had told Adrian I was thirsty, not hungry.
It then got very quiet in there, and suddenly the kitchen door swung open.
“You may come in now, Cecilia.” Called Adrian.
I walked in, and immediately spotted a glass of red liquid sitting on the counter. I couldn’t tell what it was, but it was slightly thick looking, and it smelled amazing.
"Come and drink this, Cecilia.” He said in a hushed voice.
I walked slowly over to where the glass was, picked it up, and began to drink. It was the most amazing thing that I had ever tasted. It was like a wine, but I figured it wasn’t any cheap wine. It clung to my lips a little after I had stopped drinking, and I licked it quickly from my lips. It was the most delicious thing that I had ever had in my life.
“What was that?” I questioned as I looked at the empty glass.
“Blood.” Was his only response.
I felt sick at that moment, and I walked outside and retched on the grass. It was horrible of me to have done such a thing, and for me to also think it was good to.
“You’ll get use to it.” Adrian said from the doorway leading back into the kitchen.
“It was so good, but how could I have done something like that?” I began to cry again.
“It’s not you thinking right now, it’s the monster inside of you thinking. The monster wants blood, and it will have it.” Adrian said as he came over to me and helped me stand up.
I didn’t even look back at the grass as he led me into the house.
“It’s horrible to think about, so I just don’t think when I do that.” He whispered to me, “But it’s the only way I survive, so I drink it anyway.”
“How were you created? Was it the same way I was?” I had to know.
“I was bitten, but I wasn’t treated like you were by me. I had been attacked by a group of three vampires, and then left to die on the streets. The only thing that saved me was this woman I hardly even knew. That would be my house keeper. She brought me here, took care of me, and promised me everything would be alright if I never saw my family again.” He said looking sideways at me, “I never went back to see them. I don’t even know when my parents died.”
I felt sorry for him, and really appreciated the fact that he did it to save me, not because he had been hungry.
“I’m so sorry, Adrian. Thank you for saving my life.” I didn’t know what else to say, and I knew I couldn’t ask to go see my brother, not after the way I had just acted.
He let a small smile escape from his lips as he said, “I would say it was a pleasure, but that wouldn’t be right.”
“I’m not going to ask to go see my brother, keep him away from me until I can find a way to control myself. I think that I want to go back to my house, see if that will help me.” I whispered.
“Do you remember how to get back here?” Adrian questioned.
“I remember, and I won’t be out late.” I said softly.
Adrian bent and kissed my cheek, “Stay away from the people, love. We don’t want you attacking them now do we?”
“No.” I said quickly, “I’ll be back soon.”
With that, I turned and headed out to the stabled to get me a horse.
I could hear their pulses, but their blood didn’t hold any power over me.
I hopped up on the black mare, and took off. I had to get back before the sun set, and I knew that I wouldn’t have long to stay at my house.
