chapter twenty-nine ✧ old students & rival dojos
( season two, episode twenty )

❝ an old student walks in, wins a
sparring match, and you all
suddenly turn on jack? ❞

"𝐇𝐄𝐘, 𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐀𝐋𝐌𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄, 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄 the channel," Eddie said, turning around in his seat to look at the TV in Falafel Phil's.

Milton obliged, and the instant the program changed, Jerry's face twisted into a frown. "Yo! What are you doing, man? I was just watching my favorite cartoon, 'Worm with a Perm'." His friends looked at him as a smile spread across his face. "You know what it's about?"

"A worm with a perm?" Kim guessed sarcastically.

"Oh, you watch it, too."

She rolled her eyes and shook her head, turning to Jack. "Where's Ronnie? You guys are only tolerable if she's here, too."

"She's on the phone with her dad," he replied, glancing back up at the television behind him. "She'll be in after."

"Here we go," Eddie said while the rest of the friend group remained unfazed. "They're about to announce who's gonna be in the annual California Battle of the Dojos."

"Should we go get Rudy?" Milton asked.

Jerry rolled his eyes. "No, no," he answered, shaking his head. "Every year he comes in a disguise because he can't handle the embarrassment when our dojo doesn't get in. Trust me, he's around here somewhere." He began looking around the restaurant, his gaze settling on an old woman at a table in the middle of the room. "Ah. There he is."

Jack furrowed his brows as the boy stood up from his seat. "Jerry, I don't think that's—"

"No, no," Kim interrupted with a smirk. "Let him go."

Jerry let out a breath while the group continued to watch him. "Look, I know you're ashamed, but we both know how this is gonna end," he said to the old woman. "So why don't you say we hit the mats and get our sweat on, eh?"

The woman grabbed her tray and started hitting him, Jerry's yelps filling the restaurant. Veronica paused in the doorway, her phone still in her hand, while the sight filled her brown irises. "Why is a lady hitting Jerry?"

"He thought she was Rudy," Milton explained, to which she nodded slowly.

"Right..."

She sat down in the booth next to Jack, fiddling with her phone. "How's your dad?" Kim asked, and Veronica looked up.

"Hmm? Oh, the—the call didn't go through," she replied, shrugging with a distracted chuckle. "So..."

Jack furrowed his brows. "Are you—?"
