The grand stairs creaked slightly under Ishanvi's anklets as she and Aayansh descended, side by side - her peach saree swaying gently, his black three piece suit hugging his tall frame with intimidating grace.
The hall was silent.
Too silent.
All the elders - Raghav, Meera, Arjun, Maya, Ravi, and Sunita - stood in a line near the center couch, almost... waiting.
Their eyes didn't miss the way Aayansh's hand hovered behind Ishanvi's waist protectively. Nor the slight smugness on his face. But even that arrogance couldn't hide the tiredness in his eyes.
Because they had put it there.
Maya, looking paler than usual, stepped forward first. Her hands trembled as she folded them slowly. "Aayansh... beta..." her voice cracked. "I... I'm sorry."
He blinked. Once. Twice.
Silence.
"I should've stood beside you that day. I should've known my son could never..." Her throat locked. "...never do what she said. But I- I failed you."
Meera's voice joined next, firm despite the quiver. "We all did."
Raghav sighed deeply, guilt weighing his every word. "And the worst part is... we didn't just fail as family. We failed as humans. We let someone like Avni twist our love into doubt."
Aayansh's jaw tightened slightly, but his arms stayed loosely crossed over his chest. His eyes weren't wild or angry anymore. No.
They were tired.
Disappointed.
Sunita joined in, her eyes already misty. "We know you don't owe us forgiveness... but we're here, folding our hands, asking for it anyway."
Maya coughed, weakly, her body slightly swaying - and it was that moment... that broke something.
Aayansh stepped forward instantly and grabbed her hand. "Maa..."
His voice was soft.
Too soft.
He made her sit down gently on the couch, kneeling beside her as she placed her trembling hand over his cheek.
"You still called me maa," Maya whispered, breaking into silent sobs.
And Aayansh? His jaw flexed hard.
Because yes - he was furious.
Yes - they had failed him.
But he was still a son.
Still a grandson.
Still a man with a heart that never learned how to truly hate the ones who raised him.
But just as Maya leaned forward to hug him - a sharp voice cut through.
"Aap logon ka maafi maangna asaan hai..." Ishanvi's voice was calm. Controlled. But razor-sharp.
They all turned to look at her - the fierce queen in peach.
"...but kya aap log bhool gaye the ke yeh sirf aapka beta nahi tha? Yeh mere pati bhi the."
