The wind was calmer now, brushing through the rooftop like the closing breath of a long, chaotic day. Lux sat upright, steadying his breath. He'd only just come to, sweat still sticking to his neck and the ghosts of memories clawing at the back of his skull.
He remembered it all now.
LIVE.
The Imaginary Conversion Project.
The pain. The silence. The machines.
All of it—possibly from the Previous Era. And somehow, it was now a part of him.
Beside him, Kiana knelt, her expression tight with concern.
"You were crying," she said softly. "And talking in your sleep. A lot."
Lux grimaced, wiping his eyes with the back of his glove. "Sorry. That... wasn't supposed to happen."
She tilted her head, studying him for a beat. "What did you remember?"
He hesitated—then shook his head. "It's... a long story." His tone shifted. Serious now. "But first, I need to talk to the other one."
Kiana blinked. "The other—oh."
Her expression twisted into a grimace.
'Sirin... what do I do?'
A silence inside her mind. Then—
'...I, th–...heck if I know! The guy just drops out of the sky, says he's not after us, passes out, cries, and now he wants to talk?! I'm tired of this crap, Kiana. Tired, and I don't even have a damn body anymore.'
'Come on. Please? I think he's serious.'
'You're seriously thinking of letting me out again?! Have you completely lost—'
'Sirin.'
A long sigh filled the mental space they shared.
'Fine! Fine. Just... let me handle it so he doesn't flip and decide to start round two of "Let's Kill the Herrscher."'
'I don't think he'd—'
'Don't say it. That's the naivest thing I've ever heard you think.'
A golden glow pulsed through Kiana's eyes as they shifted from blue to burning amber. Her posture changed, movements sharper, colder—purposeful. The difference was impossible to miss.
Lux raised an eyebrow as he watched her transition, fascinated despite himself.
"You wanted to see me?" Sirin said, arms crossed as she stared him down. "So what is it? Planning to try skewering me again? Just so you know—you'd lose this time."
Lux shook his head slowly. "No. I don't want to fight. Not anymore. I need you to believe that."
"Hah. Believe you?" Sirin scoffed. "Right. And why are you even here then, if not to finish what you started?"
"I need answers," he said, gaze unwavering. "About you. About what's happening. About what's coming."
"And what makes you think I'll humor you?" she sneered. "I don't hand out information to every two-bit assassin who cries himself awake after trying to kill me."
"I'm offering a trade," Lux replied, ignoring her attempt at throwing him off. "You answer a few questions... and I'll give you intel on Shicksal. Detailed stuff. Personnel, operations—things you'll really want to know."
That made her pause.
"Oh?" Sirin's smirk twisted into something more curious, more dangerous. "Now that's a better opening line."
The wind tugged at their clothes, stirring silence between them.
Sirin narrowed her glowing amber eyes, folding her arms as if to wrap herself in her own tension. "Fine. Ask away."
