Chapter 3
~Danny~
Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. Don’t freak out Danny. You’re just going out to lunch. With a guy. A really cute guy. Oh wow. Normally I don’t freak out so badly. But I just met this guy on the streets. Oh gosh this sounds bad. Okay gotta stop freaking out. I led him to my favorite diner so far. The first day I came here I needed to get out away from my new house and my parents. I was just walking around when I came across this cute little diner that was surprisingly nice. I found out two things that day. Indiana wasn’t so bad. And Trudy’s Diner had really good burgers.
I led him in to my favorite table. When we were seated and the waitress had brought us our drinks we started getting more comfortable around each other. “So,” he began,” tell me more about this macho football player.” He said with a grin. Oh, how that grin was adorable.
Even as I thought this I squirmed in my seat. I was feeling unusually uncomfortable. I had forgotten when I was thinking about Jack earlier that he was still in California. I felt a pang in my chest. He seemed to notice something was up when I just looked at my water glass, biting my lip. “Hey is everything okay? I didn’t mean to strike a nerve there. It just seemed like you liked to talk about him.”Sam said nicely.
I gave him a little smile and took in a deep breath. “It’s just that… Jack is my best friend and he still lives in California, where I moved from.” I told him the rest of the story. How he stood up for me and all that. And also how my parents had made me move away from my friends for my mom’s work. He looked at me in concern when I told him just how much I missed him. Sam was really easy to talk to. I finished with “And now I really miss California. I mean, Indiana just seems so small compared to the giant state I’m used to.” I watched Sam with measured eyes.
He just nodded and said “You think this is small, have you ever been to the town next to this? Winslow? Now that is small.” Sam looked at me through his gorgeous eyes. Even though he was complaining it made me feel better because I knew he was only saying that for me.
“You got me there.” I bit my lip and evaluated his expression. He chuckled at me and I shortly joined along. Our waitress brought us our meal and we ate the delicious burgers, talking about light topics such as school and work. I told him I was going to the public school close to where we were in the city.
“I go to this school where there is only like around 400 kids in all four grades! It’s crazy. I always go here to get away from small city-itis. That’s what I call it anyway. You’re so lucky that you get to live out here at all.” He smiled at me. Again I smiled back. “I guess it depends what you call lucky.” I laughed. Ugh. Why did he have to be so darn CUTE. I mean why? It was like I was having an internal battle. Maybe… maybe I can have just a summer boyfriend. Geez, look at me. I’ve known this guy a day and I’m thinking about me and him being together. Wow, way to sound desperate. But it’s so hard not to with that cute half smile he’s smiling at me making me melt. And his EYES. Why me? Oh, I better say something if I don’t want to look like a complete and utter idiot.
“So, what were you doing out in the street?”I asked.
“Oh, you know just trying to make some extra cash. Plus, I like to see what other people think of my songs.” He said in his angelic voice. I really do need to stop thinking these thoughts.
“That’s cool. I like to experiment with my guitar, but I could never make real music with it. What do you like to write about?” I asked with a light smile.
“Oh, you know everything and anything,” His eyes lighting up. “One time I wrote a song about how my socks were both the same and wondering if they were in love. Of course, that was when I was 10 and just learning how to play the guitar. Now I write much better songs than socks falling in love.” We both laughed at that. Silence filled the air. Not an awkward silence, but a peaceful one.
“So,” I said filling the quiet, “do you think I’ll see you again?” I asked, hopefully not sounding to hopeful. He took my arm that was lying on the table and wrote with the pen for the check his phone number.
“Call me any time you wanna meet up or just talk. I’m all ears.” He smiled a sheepish grin at me. I didn’t see a reason for him to be embarrassed, when butterflies were having a war in my stomach. I smiled back at him so that he wouldn’t feel awkward. We got up and stepped into the nice, fresh air.
“My parents will be freaking out. I better get home.” I said even though it was only 2:00.
“Okay. I’m gonna go back to my street corner. I still have to make that extra dollar, huh?” He smiled at me wider. The outdoors suited him. I didn’t know what he would do in winter.
“Bye, you know you can call me whenever you want to.”I said sincerely hoping that would sound right. He replied,”I might just take you up to that.” I smiled and continued the way back home.
