Danny POV~ 3 years later
Danny crashed on her bed head first and let out a dramatic sigh. Her and Sam eventually got together and dated into their sophomore year in college. There was someone else coming into the picture and she thought Sam could see it. She didn’t want to hurt his feelings after all they had been through but she couldn’t see even living another day without this person.
It all started their freshman year when they moved to California together to go to college. Danny had unpacked her stuff and smiled at her new surroundings. Everything was so new. New place, new year, new friends. She grinned and opened the window to let in some sunlight. She went back to unpacking her stuff on her side of the room when the door burst open. A beautiful girl with long curly blonde hair came in.
Danny couldn’t help but stare at her. The girl pushed her enormous suitcase through the door and grinned, throwing a hand up in greeting. “Hi, I’m Jenny. I’m your roommate.” For a second Danny didn’t say anything as she marveled at Jenny’s crystalline voice. It was so clear and concise that it made Danny want to shiver.
She hurriedly put on a smile and raised her hand in greeting as well. “Hey, I’m Danny. I hope you don’t mind I took this half of the room.” She gestured behind her to show her stuff lying open on the floor.
“No, it’s okay. I like that side better anyways.” Jenny said good naturedly. Danny came to like this girl instantly and as the year progressed they became best friends. Sam had started to feel left out as Danny spent more and more time with Jenny. Rightly so, because Danny wasn’t everything that Sam thought her to be.
Jenny was beautiful and smart. She was an artist as well as studying to be a marine biologist. She wore glasses that slid to the edge of her nose when she was reading and her curly blonde hair was always tucked behind her ear or in a clip when they studied together. She had fine piano hands and her laugh was always warm and genuine. When she smile Danny felt like her heart stopped and she couldn’t help but smile too. Sam was disappearing into the recesses of her mind as Danny spent all of her time with Jenny.
That gets her to the point she was at now. She needed to break up with him as soon as possible. She hadn’t felt anything for him in a year and she needed to get it out of the way. She lifted her head gingerly off the pillow and stared at her phone before hitting Sam’s contact. He picked up on the second ring. “What’s up, babe?”
She sighed again, “Not much. Listen we need to talk.”
Sam groaned, “Ugh, what did I do now?”
Danny put her hand to her face and rubbed her eye in frustration. “Nothing. Listen, can you come over now?”
Sam sighed understandably annoyed. “Yeah, I guess. Your apartment?”
“No, um,” Danny squeaked, “can we meet at that café we go to sometimes?”
“Yeah sure, see you then. Love you.” Sam hung up abruptly.
When Danny got to the coffee shop she ordered a hot tea to calm her nerves and sat in a corner away from the rest of the throng of people at the popular café near campus. She watched Sam walk in, order himself a huge black coffee like he always did before he came and sat with her in the back. The coffee was a familiar memory to her that she always liked because he had switched to black coffee to prove that he was a manly man to her. She’d given up her beloved Lucky Charms to prove that she was grown up as well.
“What’s up?” Sam asked, throwing himself into the chair in front of her. His hair was disheveled and his feathery bangs hung in front of his eyes. She still felt fondness for him and didn’t want to break the great friendship she’d built with him for the last few years just because she had been confused about what she liked and who she wanted. ‘
