Chapter 4

~Sam~

I finished up playing guitar on my usual street corner early because it was really hard to concentrate after meeting a girl like Danny. I went back to my car and threw the guitar into the back seat. I climbed in and quickly lowered the hood of the convertible because it was stifling hot. As I drove through the streets, wind going through my hair, I thought about our lunch today. She talked a lot about herself, but that was okay. I could tell she had been holding in those things and needed to get it out. I analyzed the conversation further in my head. It really had overall gone well. I noticed that I didn’t seem to have her number. Hopefully she’ll call or text me.

About 30 min. later I reached my destination: Home. Carefully parking backwards so that it’d be easy to get out of our garage again, I turned the engine off and gathered up my guitar stuff. As soon as I got inside I saw my mom. “Hey Mom. What’s up?” I said curiously because she had her back facing towards me, messing with some stuff in the linen closet.

“Oh, you know. Just sorting through some towels in the closet. Your father made a mess of them when he randomly reached for one. I don’t know why he can’t get the one off the top of the stack. It’s just because it has Finding Nemo on it.” She said in a huff. I was getting myself a glass of water the whole time she was saying this.

I looked at her and said, “Why is he always my father when he does something wrong? And besides I would’ve done the same thing. Finding Nemo is for like, 10 year olds.”

She stared at me for a second before grumbling, “All men are exactly the same. When you were younger you begged me for this towel. Finding Nemo was the cool thing then. Just remember that the next time you bad mouth it.” I groaned and retreated to the safety of my room where she couldn’t lecture me about an animated fish.

“When I grow up and have a family, I will not let their mother lecture about fish.” I said to myself. I lay on the bed and closed my eyes. I popped in my favorite ear buds and turned my music up loudly to drown out the noises of my house. My dad and little brother weren’t home yet due to his t-ball practice. Dad wanted me to be his baseball star too, but I gave that up because I liked swimming better.

Before I knew it I had drifted off to sleep and woke up to loud whining. I got up to see who was making all the racket and followed the sound to the kitchen. Brad, my little brother, was wailing about how it wasn’t fair that he couldn’t have a popsicle before dinner. “BUT I WANT IT!!!!!” he screamed.

“But honey, you won’t be hungry for dinner. It’ll be ready in about 15 minutes. Can’t you wait that long?”Mom said trying to console Brad.

“BUT I NEED IT NOW! I’LL STARVE TO DEATH IN 15 MINUTES!!!! I NEED A POPSICLE NOOOOOOOWWWW!!!!!” He screamed at the top of his lungs. Geez that kid could scream, but I knew my parents wouldn’t give in. At least they haven’t before. His antics just keep getting worse and worse. I guess being 6 and all he’s learning new ways to aggravate my parents. Of course, they still love him. I do too, just his screaming not so much.

“You will not starve to death in 15 minutes. Now I need to check on the soup or we won’t be having dinner at all.” She scolded. She then went to check on the minestrone soup which just happened to be my favorite.

“Smells delicious Mom.” I said. And it did smell amazing. Mmmmmm… now I’m starting to get unbearably hungry.

“Thank you. Someone finally appreciating my work.” She said lovingly.

“You’re welcome Mom.”

“POPSICLES!!!!!!!!!!!!” Brad burst out.

“Geez kid. You can have a popsicle after dinner. Alright?” I said ruffling his hair.

“Okay.” He sighed, defeated. I ginned at him and he grinned back, knowing this was really the better deal. He had a little bit lighter hair than me, more brown than black, with our dad’s intense blue eyes like me. As promised in 15 minutes Mom had brought out the minestrone soup after Brad and I set the table. I took my usual seat while we sat down and said a prayer. I took a bite of the soup and it was heavenly. Brad kept singing under his breath something about a Popsicle king and how his subjects ate popsicles day and night. Our parents talked about work things and I asked Brad about T-ball.

After dinner Brad and I went out onto the back porch and we ate popsicles together. I always got the orange, while Brad always got red. We watched the sun go down and Brad told me how God took the sun in his hand and moved it so that we could see the moon. That kid really was something. When it got sort of chilly outside we went inside and watched TV until Mom told Brad he had to take a bath. “BUT I DON’T WANNA TAKE A BATH!”He screamed and it started all over again. She finally got him to take a bath by getting out all of his water toys and playing with him in the bathroom. At around 10:00 when Mom and Dad sat curled up by the TV I went to my room and closed my room thinking about my really good day filled with a pretty girl named Danny, good soup, and ice cold popsicles.

As always, comments highly appreciated. Also votes and likes. :) I might not get a chance to write next week and this weekend because I get to go on VACATION! Not even sure where. We are STILL deciding. And we're trying to leave by Sunday soooo.... Seeing how it's Thursday we better get on it! But while I am absent... DON'T FORGET ABOUT ME, OR DANNY OR SAM! Because I would be so very heartbroken. :) Love ya all,
