Frozen In Time

Even in captivity, Serena experienced serenity.

It was a memory she couldn't quite explain. It came and went as it pleased, out of sight and out of order in a matter of seconds. When the thoughts of sliding a blade across her throat would come across her mind, that memory would slither in her mind, and somewhere, Serena would regain her will to live another day. But after she was rescued from the palace of the dammed, she never thought about it again.

Until that day.

Perhaps it was the poison which triggered its approach, or maybe Serena had lost her will to live again. Either way, the memory has resurfaced, just like before, but this time, Serena remembered.

Though the bed she lay on wasn't the softest, but it was the most comfortable one yet. The silk of her pillowcase softly grazed her skin as she looked down at him.

The baby which lay next to her had a soft head with the darkest tuft of hair she'd seen, although he had barely five hair to call his own. He couldn't have been older than a month and yet the grip he hand on her finger was stronger than she'd ever seen, or perhaps she was going easy on him.

Serena looked down at him with a smile, watching him smile, babble, and coo in response to her callings. She didn't trust her eyes—unable to comprehend how could anyone be as beautiful as he was.

But the dream didn't end with him, for besides the baby, there was him. Ash lay right next to the baby—with one hand holding the baby's fingers and the other gently stroking Serena's hair.

The three of them laid still—a moment slashed away from the past—frozen in time.

It was a moment she wasn't able to put to words, only feel. It was a moment which made her feel at peace. It was a moment which made her want to live again.
