4. Fear

I should've seen something like this coming.

Of course there's going to be a Fire mage in Fairy Tail! Of course he going to try and be my friend!

Great. I guess I'll have to leave the guild after all.

I ran until my legs screamed for me to stop. I collapsed in front of a relatively large tree.

I gazed at the petals, watching them flutter softly to the ground.

They say that every year in spring, also known as the Sakura season, the blossoms on the trees in Magnolia illuminate the colors of the rainbow. These trees are called Rainbow Sakuras.

I'd love to see them when Sakura does come. Though I probably won't.

Right now, it's summer, the Natsu season.

I shook my head violently, trying to get him out of my mind.

"Why did this happen?" I whispered, seemingly speaking to the tree.

"Miss? Are you alright?" a young girl about my age was approaching me. She had bright blonde hair with some locks in a ponytail on the right side of her head, dark brown, comforting eyes, and keys that clashed together with each step she took.

She's a Celestial mage, and on the back of her right hand was the Fairy Tail symbol in a very bright pink color.

Wait, this girl's in Fairy Tail?!

I jumped up, only to bend my body into a ninety degree angle.

"You're part of Fairy Tail?!" I exclaimed, my tone a little more harsh and louder than I intended it to.

"Um, yeah?" she took a few steps back, uncertain of where I was going with this.

"I'm (y/n) (l/n)! I just joined Fairy Tail!" I exclaimed, showing her the (f/c) mark on my left shoulder.

Her eyes widened in surprise.

"I'm Lucy Heartfilia," she stated, a smile lacing over her lips, "Nice to meet you, (y/n), and welcome to Fairy Tail!"

I nodded, bring my body back to its normal state.

Then I saw that unforgettable pink hair that sticks out in any crowd. I instinctively hid behind Lucy, my heart pounding.

Unfortunately, he must've seen me.

"(Y/n)! There you are!"

"Oh, hey Natsu."

Oh great. Lucy's on Natsu's side. Figures.

I sighed, trying to back away. I felt myself run into something from behind.

The tree.

Lucy's gaze reverted between me and Natsu, then grew hostile towards him.

"What did you do?!" she asked, rage brimming in her tone.

"Chill, Lucy. I didn't do anything." he said bluntly, glancing in my direction every other second to make sure I was still there.

"Then why does she look terrified of you?!"

"Because..." this time he obtained eye contact, asking me silently if she could know.

I nodded ever so slightly.

"Because her family was killed by fire. She's afraid of my flames, not me."

Lucy had a look of something that seemed like sympathy in her eyes as she approached me. My heart began to slow down, and my breaths became softer.

"(Y/n), let me to take you to my house for a little while." she said quietly, gently taking my wrist and pulling me away from Natsu, who had a defeated look in his eyes.

I nestled into the chair, the steaming cup of chamomile tea resting in my hands.

"(Y/n), how come you're afraid of fire?"

At even the mention of the word, I tensed up. But after having taken one sip of the hot drink in my hands, my muscles finally learned the meaning of relax.

"It's just as Natsu said. My family was killed with fire."

"Do you think you can be a little more descriptive?" Lucy asked politely.

"What? Why?"

"He might not seem like it, but Natsu can be really sensitive," she explained soberly, "If you keep turning him away like this, he's bound to do something to make you understand."

"But... It's not Natsu, its the fact that he's a Fire mage."

"I know," she shrugged putting a small item on the table. There was a small flash, and suddenly, whatever the item was had a small light upon it.

I stared at it, not comprehending. I reached toward the small slab of wax, feeling the heat of the tiny light warming my hand.

Then I realized what it was. Fire. A candle. I had the sudden urge to pull away, but I locked eyes with Lucy, who had a patient gleam in her dark orbs.

I looked back down at the small flame. For a few seconds, I admired it. The warmth it gave off, the sense of security it brought me... Then I reached further toward it.

There was a pain on one finger that seemed to shoot, down my entire arm. I cried out, my hand screaming in agony.

I clapped, causing more pain, and held my magic steady over the burn.

"Yes, it's dangerous," Lucy muttered, "But Natsu would never do anything to hurt anyone from Fairy Tail. I promise."

I looked into her eyes, then into the gray ones of the boy who was perched on the windowsill.
