Your blood ran cold. There was someone at the door, and whoever it was, was not letting up. You let your breathing slow down, your eyes narrowing as you analyzed the room around you. A knife was an arm's reach away. You hesitated to use your nen, as doing so could alert anyone else in the mysterious's knocker's party.
Feitan made no sound as he lurked next to you now. He watched you as your feral instincts took over.Expect they were too calculated to be feral. They were cool, precise. He nearly flinched as his mind wondered what could have created the need to be this way.
*Knock knock knock* the pounding was growing louder.
*Knock knock*
"Get up and out of that bed of yours! We only have 40 minutes until sunset!" Hina's loud, whiny voice was heard throughout your entire apartment.
"Paper thin, these damned walls" You hissed, picking up your purse you had lazily thrown on your couch the night before."
"What was that?!" your friend snapped as you closed the door behind you.
"Nothing Hin!" You forced a smile on your face, desperate for her to see the good side of you.
This was an unbearably long and miserable summer. The streets swelled with hoards of people moving in droves to whatever cool relief they could find-the public pools, the cool air conditioning of malls, the shade under trees at the park.
Because the sun was beginning to set, the sky began to bleed orange and pink, the temperature was dropping slowly. It taunted you as you walked on the sidewalks of the boiling city.
"Same place as last time?" you gestured a hand towards the ice cream shop you and Hina frequented every week.
"You know it!" She beamed, skipping with her hands buried in the pockets of her olive corduroy overalls. An odd choice for this sweltering heat you thought.
Mint chocolate chip, but not the kind that has a ghastly artificial green color. That was your favorite flavor, and you never dared to order anything but that.
Hina scooped melting goops of her rocky road ice cream, which she inconveniently asked for in a sprinkle cone, trying her hardest to beat the laws of nature as the heat selfishly devoured her scoops.
Your favorite ice cream, and your favorite abandoned rooftop. It was conveniently nestled between two towing and ancient trees, which offered some shade. This was a weekly ritual, ice cream and watch the sun melt off the endless Yorknew skyline.
There were few things more beautiful than the setting sun. The sky embraced such a gorgeous shade of salmon, with a citrusy orange. The blue hue was nearly gone, and the sun was a sweltering gem in the sky.
"Ugh, it's too hot to think!" Hina complained. She had resorted to biting chunks of her cold treat now. "You ever get a feeling that the world is trying to cook us?" She giggled, her amber eyes glimmering, almost looking orange.
"Maybe we're just too close to the sun" You whispered up to the sky. You took in the sky, the clouds, the sound of the bustling city below.
Hina chuckled so softly you almost didn't hear her.
"Have you ever thought of running?" as soon as the last word rolled off her tongue, she looked up to the sky.
"Running? Running from what?" your finger traced the cracks in the roof.
"Running from all of it. Your family, even your name. From the people who know you." Her tone had suddenly shifted from the always gleeful one she caried on her like a badge of honor, to a serious, nearly solemn one.
