Quinn didn't fall asleep, her mind was too busy calculating the chances of her getting an infection or virus that would cause her to have fish scales across her legs and her eyes were peering sadly down at her legs—hoping that they would peel away and she would be welcomed with her legs once more. She sat nestled against the top of her bedspread with two white pillows propped up against the headboard in her room, her legs sprawled out in front of her and her eyes flickering from her legs to her bedroom door and finally to her phone. Thoughts surrounded her at the idea of texting Nita to come over.
Instead, fear crept in and Quinn knew that if she went to her friend that she didn't know if Nita would help her figure out what had happened to her or she would run away from her and realize that her best friend wasn't normal anymore. Sure, Quinn could have liked a music genre or a superhero that Nita didn't like and they would still be the same but when it came to Quinn growing scales and having a bewildering taste to be in water it would cause some shifts in her friendship with Nita.
When her bewilderment couldn't last sitting nestled inside of herself, Quinn headed out of her room and made her way towards her mom's bedroom—where she knew that her mom was on her computer, looking at her sales for the month. A sight that Quinn was accustomed to seeing, since she was a little girl.
Heading into her mom's room when she found that her bedroom door was open, Quinn was greeted with the sight of her mom sitting on her bed with her laptop sitting on the flower printed bedspread and her legs curled up to the side. Her wild mane of blonde hair was messy and out of control, and her hazel eyes were plastered on the screen in front of her. That was until Quinn cleared her throat, which in return sent her snapping her attention away from her computer screen to Quinn standing in front of her in sweat pants and a long sleeve t-shirt, her arms folded against her chest.
"Yes, sweetie?" her mom's soft voice reverberated throughout the room and Quinn sighed before she headed the rest of the way to the bed and fought the urge to command her mom to tell her the answer to why she was suddenly breaking out in scales across her legs. She sat down on the edge of the bed and looked down at her feet before bringing her eyes up and gazed at her mom sitting on her bed.
Please know what's happening to me—Quinn thought to herself in her mind, before she cleared her throat again and saw the worry that was soaked within the hazel irises of her mom. The blonde haired woman craned her head to the side and reached one of her hands out before letting her hand fall on her hand that was pressed against her thy, as if knowing that it was hard to start telling her what had happened to her since her birthday only a few days ago.
"Mom..." Quinn drifted off before she continued, not knowing how to bring this up before she let her eyes fall down to her legs once more—as though she was reminded again of why she was in her mom's bedroom three days after her birthday.
"I have something I need to tell you," Quinn commented, and her mom nodded her head—as though she was expecting her to tell her something that wouldn't be anything like what she had planned to tell her. "And well...maybe it's better if I show you instead."
As Quinn said this she wasn't looking at her mom, because if she did she would have seen the fearful look that crossed her features—as though she knew that this was going to happen. The sharp intake from her mom a few seconds later was enough for Quinn to bring her head up and glance at her mom, seeing that she had lost all pigmentation in her features and that she looked as though she was hanging on by just a thread.
"Mom, are you okay?" Quinn questioned her with worry present in her voice, being the one to reach her hand out and touch her mom's shoulder. She felt her eyes widen when her mom yanked herself away from her sharply, as though she had just been burned and tears cascaded down her features as she stared down at the blue haired girl.
