It wasn't long into the trip that Quinn and Gavin felt the mermaid and merman within them take control—their tails sprouted out and their legs were gone. They had to shed their pants, since their tails were awkwardly trying to not restrain themselves in their jeans. If she hadn't already seen her legs disappear and her tail appear, a beautiful aqua blue, then Quinn knew that she would have probably had an anxiety attack at seeing her tail flopping in the fish tank in front of her very own eyes.
She nervously bit her lip though, and turned her head towards Gavin, discovering that he was lost in his own thoughts—probably about how the life he had been living for the past eighteen years didn't lead him into a normal human's life. He wasn't going to go to college, eventually marry, and have children like any other person would. He was going to become a merman, get transported to the ocean, get in the ocean, and then swim away with Quinn by his side—so that they could live the rest of their lives secluded by their loved ones and thrown into a world that he truly didn't know existed.
"I wish you didn't have to have this happen to you, Gavin," Quinn quietly admitted as she peered at the back window of the van. She saw the cars that were speeding past them, and she sort of wondered if a police officer was going to come and pull Nessie over for going over the speed limit.
Quinn couldn't help but snort internally at the thought of a police officer scanning Nessie and having her do a sobriety test, and then have the van searched only to show that Quinn and Gavin were sitting in the trunk of the car in fish tanks with a mermaid and merman tail. She could imagine the police officer either thinking that they were losing it, or they would end up passing out from the shock.
"There's plenty of things that we wish didn't happen to people, but they happen none the less," Gavin responded, his voice calm and composed and she couldn't help but peer down at her lap, where her tail almost twitched with sadness at the thought of Gavin actually being upset with her now that this was really happening.
She was thankful that Nessie was blasting her music up near the front, so that she couldn't hear the conversation that Quinn and Gavin were having. It was some Metal music—and it completely captivated the pink striped blonde haired girl who was head banging and screaming the words that were coming from the singer's lips.
For some odd reason, Quinn could easily see why it would be John out of any of the Belts sons that would end up making out with her. They were both troublesome kids, and well both had been the complete black sheep of the family. They would party together and maybe get drunk and not remember the night before—John had done that plenty of times before, and come home stumbling while smelling like tobacco and booze.
But enough about John, and enough about Nessie. Quinn was more focused on the boy that was in the fish tank that was next to her. His arm hung out of the fish tank and biting the corner of her lip, Quinn hastily reached over and took his hand in hers—wishing and hoping that he wouldn't be mad at her. He already knew how much she felt bad for him being thrown into this with her.
"I'm not mad at you, Quinn," Gavin whispered quietly in the air, after a few silenced moments, before he flickered his eyes away from the back window and towards Quinn again—finding that her blue eyes had never looked so sad and defeated before in her life. He felt a sense of guiltiness wash throughout him, as though he was the reason why she was so upset and he knew that he needed to reassure her that everything was alright
"I just...I never imagined my life would end up like this. I probably would have finished out my senior year winning state with the rest of the guys, and then spend the rest of the semester just wandering aimlessly and hoping that I have enough credits to pass. Instead, I ended up meeting a fantastically awesome blue haired girl that can draw like no one else can, and has a cool sense of music taste, and has one of the biggest hearts that anyone can have," Gavin admitted as he brushed one of his fingers against her hand—enough that Quinn felt her heart begin to accelerate and her chest feel more free than before.
