Sitting farther away from anyone else in the gymnasium with an art book in her hands, Quinn studied the splotches of different hues upon each page and the description of inspiration written in curvy typed letters next to each artwork. Her sky blue irises paused for the moment when she heard the sound of screaming a few seats farther from her on the wooden bleachers. Picking her eyes up from the portrait of a eighteenth century woman holding a bouquet of flowers in her hands, Quinn was welcomed with the scene of Gavin Elwood sliding easily through the waters, his mop of light blond hair a shimmer in the sunlight. He was the boys' varsity swim team captain, and was currently in the lead against Tiller High's swim captain.
"You know, for a girl who's said she's hasn't fancied Gavin since eighth grade, you sure do look at him a lot." Snapping her gentle gaze away from the handsome swimmer, Quinn was greeted with the image of her best friend, Nita standing next to her with her hands propped up on her hipbones.
Nita was another art student in their high school, but a junior instead of a senior like Quinn because of how her birthday fell on the calendar. She had warm chestnut tanned skin, long brown hair that was always a curly mane, and clothes that looked as though it came from her mom's teenage years. Not that it was anything that wasn't from the truth, Nita wore her mom's clothes from when she was a teenager and often was seen going to vintage thrift stores to find other treasures that she could wear.
The short and skinny girl was the opposite of her best friend. Unlike Nita, Quinn had bright blue hair that was always pulled up in a messy bun or a ponytail. She was insanely pale, and wore light makeup compared to Nita's heavy style that graced her skin. She was five foot four, a few more places higher than Nita's four foot ten height and always wore bright colored leggings with baggy sweat shirts. And she was on the larger side, she wasn't big, but she surely wasn't considered on the skinny side since she hit puberty in sixth grade and became one of the curvier girls in her grade.
"And for a girl who said that she was going to quit smoking, you suspiciously smell like cigarette smoke," Quinn chirped back, earning a roll of an eye from Nita before she threw one of her arms against the back of Quinn's black sweat shirt covered shoulders as she sat down on the bleachers next to her.
"What can I say? Some habits are hard to quit," Nita commented, knowing that she meant more than her little bad habit. The flicker of Quinn's eyes towards the back of a junior's curly haired head a row down from them allowed her to know that she had hit bull's eye.
Quinn hesitantly pulled her eyes away from the junior that was munching on some nachos and cheese before she let her eyes wander towards Gavin. He was pushing himself out of the swimming pool, his lean and muscular body slick with water as he got onto dry land. His blond hair was falling near his eyes, but as he brought his hand up to pull his wet hair out of his face, he couldn't help but flicker his eyes up towards the blue blur that he had been observed in the corner of his eye when he was swimming....
The blue blur that happened to be a blue haired girl and not an article of distracting clothing in the bleachers.
Quinn's eyes widened when Gavin's gentle brown eyes met her frightened blue ones, and snapping her head down she cussed underneath her breath lightly before she slammed her art booklet in a loud thud.
"Shit, he wasn't supposed to see that," she muttered to herself with anger, finding that the whole thing was embarrassing. Her face was flushed and her hands shook as she avoided looking at the boy.
Knowing that she needed to get out of here, Quinn started to get up from her spot on the bleachers only to see that Gavin was still staring at her but with wonder in his behavior now. She shot him a worried smile before she looked back at Nita, who was studying the scene before her. The brown haired girl smiled wickedly before she grabbed Quinn's arm in her small and pink manicured hand with much more strength that she was credited for.
