I ripped open the door and ran inside. I heard the struggle again and hurried upstairs to where I heard them. I ripped open one of the doors and saw a guy with his arms around Cassady's neck.
There was a knife on a table a few feet away. I grabbed it and threw it at the guy. He had his back turned on me so he didn't know about my presence up until the knife penetrated his back. He let go of her and she kicked him in the shin. When he bent over in pain she kneed him in the stomach and shoved him over before running to me.
"What happened to you?" She asked, concerned, as she looked into my eyes.
"It's nothing. We have bigger problems," I said. And as if on cue, Jason barged into the room.
"You bastard," he said, pointing a gun toward me.
"Please, Jason. Listen to me. You don't want to do this," I said.
"How sure are you?" He asked. His left eye was closed shut as blood continued to make a river down his cheek. He seemed to have removed the nail.
"Cassady, get behind me," I whispered.
"Do you know how much I hate it when things aren't the same?" He said with a evil tone in his voice, before shooting my good foot. I cried out in pain but tried to keep standing.
He shot me in the shoulder and my side jerked back. I fell next to the guy I killed earlier. He had a gun in his holster. I ripped it out and pointed it to Jason. "My turn," I said as I shot his left shoulder, then his right. He fell back as well and Cassady fell to her knees. Holding my head.
"Tristan? Are you okay?" She asked as I started to get dizzy and my eyes started to slowly close.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I said, trying not to worry her.
"The police are on their way." She assured me. But it sounded more if she was assuring herself.
Then it hit me. The sick and twisted irony of the situation. Her brother died the same way as this. He got shot and died in her arms.
I was next.
A single tear ran down from my eye as I cupped her cheek. "I'm going to be fine." I said.
My eyes started to feel even heavier. I'm not fine. I said in my head.
"I love you." I said before I lost my grip on reality and darkness took over my sight.
-------
I woke up in the hospital. When I looked down I saw a blond mess on my chest. Cassady, I thought.
She's okay. And that's all that counts. I love her more than anything.
But the best thing is, she's mine, and I'm hers.
Forever.
