I watched the Stiff's brother all evening long. He was acting fidgety, even though he tried to seem casual. Well, I got some news for you brother. I'm an experienced Candor & I can see right through you. When he asked to go to the bathroom, his hands shaking & his face flushed from the attention, I squinted my eyes at him. Something was up, I knew it. When he was gone, I walked right out the door after him, not bothering to ask.
"Hey, you're not going anywhere. So walk right back in here and sit down." Christina was always a bossy Candor from the start. We went to school together, & my mother worked with her mother. I don't know where she gets her attitude, though, because her mother is the most patient woman I've ever seen, and her father is so humble that I can't help but wonder if he's one of those Stiff wannabe transfers. I don't even bother turning around.
"Oh, you're going to let Caleb go to the bathroom alone? Caleb, who almost got Tris killed? Please, spare me. If I wanted to be dead, I would've stayed with those lunatic factionless, thank you very much. And now we're trusting that Stiff traitor walk off alone?" Christina snorts, & Tobias growls. Matthew, however, doesn't object.
"Yeah, yeah, go. I have a feeling you won't be a part of this mission anyway. But if you're gone for too long, we'll have a clue who's the real traitor, yeah?" I nod my head, and walk out. Before I go, the backpack next to the door catches my eye. I stop, stretching slightly, and look back. Nobody is paying any attention to me. I snatch the backpack, and walk out the room. I see the Stiff's brother walking down the corridor, toward the main hallway. I take another hallway to get to the same hallway, something I learned from exploring the compound in my spare time, which happened to be all the time. I speed walk to get to him, ignoring the grunts and stares people give me as I shove my way through them. When I get to the gate entrance, I search around for Caleb. There. His rumpled hair and his light blue button up give him away in the midst of the workers in their uniforms. He's not moving, though. He's stopped, looking back towards the conference room, and I freeze, too. I know what he's looking for. The backpack. He's going try to do the suicide mission himself, because he thinks he can't live with the fact that Tris can't forgive him. And if he succeeds, he's going to get us all killed, because triggering the alarms will bring the guards, and...and...Erudite stuff. Whatever, I don't have time for this. I run towards him, and I trip over a worker on the floor, picking up some files she dropped. I fall on my face, and the pain of my head hitting the hard linoleum floor stings. I wince, feeling the warm bump on my forehead where a bruise is sure to form later.
"Not now, not now," I hiss through gritted teeth. Before I can reach him, Caleb starts walking back. I need to stop him. I need to, even for a bunch of people who don't know me and don't care if I'm dead. I yell, the only way I figure I'll get his attention.
"Hey!" He freezes, and I shut my eyes, imagining what would've happened if I hadn't stopped him.
