I open my eyes. I'm lying on a bed in a small grey room, the shades closed. It seems familiar somehow, but with the throbbing pain in my head and a dry throat, I can't tell why. I croak, gasping for water and for air, and I hear someone get up from a couch. He or she walk towards me, a tall and masculine figure. He seems familiar, too. I watch his hands go to a glass of water on the nightstand by the bed. He slips his hand under my head and guides the glass to my lips. I sip on it, grateful for whoever it is that's helping me. He sets the glass back on the nightstand and sits on the bed. He looks at me, with his warm, dark blue eyes and my memory comes back in pieces. This is Tobias, Marcus Eaton's son. He loves me, I think.
"Hi," I whisper it, my voice barely audible. He laughs softly and strokes my cheek with the back of his hand.
"Hi," he says. "Get some rest. You've been through a lot." His deep, rumbling voice has a soothing effect on me, and I instantly fall back asleep.
--------------------------------------------------
When I wake up again, I hear voices by my bed. I hold my breath to hear what they're saying.
"We need to leave her here, if we want to succeed. She's not in any condition to be traveling, or moving around at all. You understand, Tobias." A female voice, that sounds like Evelyn. What is she doing here? And where am I?
"I understand, completely. It's my responsibility to, in fact. But all I'm saying is if we take her to Cara, then she'll be nearby. If anything happens to her, we can reach her quickly. I just can't leave her here, in the city. We're still setting it up, and factionless riots are starting up like flames everywhere. She could be attacked, or discovered. What then? I can't leave her alone, not knowing how she's doing or not being able to see her." Tobias's voice sounds calm and sure, and I feel at ease knowing that he'd never leave me behind.
Evelyn sighs. "She isn't worth sabotaging the plan, Tobias. I know a safe place to keep her, one where only I know about. We can take her there, and I can arrange for someone to look after her. And besides, Cara has enough to deal with already."
"Then we wait until she's better. We can stay here, in the city, and help set everything up. Even if it takes months, or years, I'm not going anywhere unless she's with me." His voice is firm, and sure, and I wonder if he's making a mistake, doing all of this for me.
"Tobias, you know that the longer we put it off, the harder it will be to start back up," Evelyn says. "I have weapons, transportation, food, soldiers, all scheduled for your departure in two days. What will I tell them?"
Tobias's response is the same. "Tell them we wait. We wait for Tris to get better, and we don't tell her anything until it's time. Trust me, I know when we'll be ready. But for now, put everything aside. We could all use some rest after everything that's happened."
"Alright. I'm doing this for you, my son. Make this time worth it. I'll arrange for everything to be rescheduled. As for now, maybe you should find a way to tell her about Uriah, Caleb and Peter." she says. Footsteps grow farther from my bed, and a door opens and shuts. I keep still, faking sleep. I don't want them to know I was listening. Tobias sighs, and he paces back and forth next to my bed. I try to steady my breath, and keep my hands from moving. Times passes, Tobias pacing and me pretending to be asleep. He stops, once, right next to my head. I hear the floor squeak as he crouches. It's silent, except for me trying to keep my breathing pace normal so he won't suspect. He puts a hand on my forehead, and I feel my heart race. He leans closer, so I can feel his warm breaths on my neck.
"I think you've told me this before," he whispers. "But I never got the chance to say it back. I'm so glad, Tris, that you're still alive. I don't know what I would've done if you had died. But I want you to know, Tris, I love you. I love you, I love you, I love you so much. I hope saying this will make it easier for me to tell you certain things, when the time is right. But for now, get some rest." He kisses me, right on the lips. His lips feels warm and soft against mine, and I can't move. He really did take my breath away. I open my eyes, and kiss him back. He pulls away, startled. He looks at me.
