New York City, New York, U.S.A.The only time Ellie had ever cried almost this hard was when her mother died. She had been able to console herself enough to just silent tears, after finding out her mentor and friend was dead. She was informed only yesterday during work.
Ellie flinched, her phone surprising her by vibrating. They were creating formulas and ingredients in one of Pym Technologies' many labs.
"Sorry." She said meekly to Darren. He just smiled and continued putting a yellow substance into a test tube. The number was labeled unknown. Ellie turned around, her back facing Darren.
"Miss Pym." No one ever called her that, but she knew the voice very well.
"I'm sorry to inform you that Mr. Coulson is on a very long vacation." Her other hand reached her mouth as she gasped.
"And I'm afraid he won't be returning very soon. We are asking you to come in tomorrow at ten in the morning our time."
"What happened?" Ellie barely managed to keep her voice in check. Darren was able to tell something was off with her. He looked over to see her with a hand over her mouth and her arms slightly shaking.
"Mr. Coulson sent a postcard from Vallhalla."
"Thank you for informing me, I will be there." Director Fury ended the call.
Ellie hadn't noticed the few tears that had escaped her eyes. She involuntarily sniffed, and Darren immediately stood up.
"Evelyn, what's wrong?" She wiped the tears and put on a smile as she turned around.
"It's nothing Darren." He walked over to her, his tall persona towering over her as he placed his hands gently on her shoulders. Darren gave her a warm smile.
"You can trust me, Ellie." He moved a strand of her hair behind her ear. Ellie's emotions betrayed her and allowed another tear to leak. As she blinked, more tiny droplets of water fell from her eyes. Darren pulled her into a welcoming hug. Ellie and him were always very friendly, and extremely close. Sometimes she wondered if she was acting to be his friend for the sake of her ongoing mission, or if she was actually his friend.
"Hey, hey," he cooed, "Don't be upset. Just tell me what's wrong and we can try to fix it." Ellie sniffed.
"My, um... Before I came here, I had a mentor that I could trust. He was like the father that I would have dreamed for." Darren's face twisted in concern as his eyebrows furrowed.
"Was he like Hank?" Ellie let out a short and unhumored laugh.
"If you call dying betrayal, then yes, he is like Hank." Darren's face softened.
"I'm sorry, Ellie. I'm so, so sorry." He hugged her again, and this time, she wrapped her arms around him too.
"I'm sorry I'm a bit of a mess."
"Hey, things are always better with a little chaos, right?"
"You always make it sound better." This made Darren chuckle.
"If you don't mind me asking, when is the, um, service?"
"They just said to be there by ten in the morning." He nodded.
