"Solenopsis mandibularis." Ellie's voice calmed Scott as he jogged through the tunnels. His previous experiences in the ground always ended with him screaming and making holes in the lawn. That's when he saw swarms of small, red ants begin to make a bridge for him as he came across a cliff.
"Known for their bite. The fire ants evolved into remarkable architects. They are handy to get you in and out of difficult places."
"Does that include my life?"

Why is it always about sugar? Scott thought. But after a moment, nothing was happening.
"You can do it, Scott. Come on." Scott rested his chin on the dining table and placed a finger on his temple. He concentrated, trying to tell the ants to move the cube of sugar, but they only played around, and one flew away. Scott sat up, taking the earpiece out frustratedly.
"They're not listening to me." Ellie sighed, bringing her hands up to rub her neck.
"You have to commit. You have to mean it. No shortcuts, no lies." She purposely emphasized the word, knowing it would tick off her father.
"Throwing insults into the mix will not do anyone any good, Ellie." Hank replied, walking closer to the table, and she turned her head to look at him.
"My name is Evelyn, okay? We don't have time for coddling."
"Our focus should be on helping Scott." Hank pointed his finger at her.
"Really? Is that where our focus should be?" Ellie held a hurt look in her brown eyes and her tone became soft yet it still stung. Scott noticed her discomfort almost instantly. Hank looked down in shame, no more words to say.
She picked up the earpiece, placing it in her ear and clearing her mind, thinking of the commands as she closed her eyes. Scott shifted rather awkwardly in his seat until he witnessed swarms of ants climb up onto the tabletop and towards the sugar container and the teacup. The ants worked as a team, passing down sugar cube after sugar cube in three separate lines and into the cup.
That's when Scoot heard a shaking sound above him, looking up at the hanging light near him to see that ants flooding down the chain and onto the light, beginning to cover it completely. The room became darker by the second, ants covering up every last inch of light emitting from the windows as well. Scott looked at Ellie worriedly.
"Evelyn!" Hank called her name rather loudly, making her jump slightly, the ants dispersing quickly. Scott looked back and forth between the father and daughter, seeing Ellie look at Hank, disappointed and almost... Disgusted.
"I don't know why I came to you in the first place." She seethed, spitting out the words before walking away, the front door slamming. Ellie was beyond hurt, and Scott knew it. Hank sighed.
"We can't do this without her." Scott got up from the table following Ellie's path, which led him to her car. He saw her wiping tears off her cheeks and knew it could be a bad idea for him to get in. Scott gave her a moment, hoping she wouldn't notice him as she somewhat calmed down. He then walked closer and opened he passenger door just as she took off the earpiece.
