Chapter 77 No Matter What

Miria POV

The letter Nakaoka brought said that Lord Yoshinobu agreed to meet with Sakamoto. But Nakaoka believed it was a trap. However, Sakamoto decided to go even if it was a trap.

So, Fei came up with the plan to arrive with the bus so we would have a way to escape quickly. When we arrived, it was a trap, and Zanark stepped in as we had another match to determine whether imperial rule would be restored. 

(Miria replaces Kariya in this match)

The match started, and Zanark's team was swift, scoring immediately. Soon enough, we started fighting back, though. But the back and forth continued. By the time the first half ended, Zanark's team was in the lead by 2 points.

And then...

Okita: "Guh!"

Tsurugi: !

"Okita-san!"

Okita: "I can still...!"

Zanark: "You're done, Okita."

Okita: !

Tsurugi: "Are you okay, Okita-san?"

Okita: "I am a failure... Is my power not enough to protect this country?"

Tsurugi: "Please listen, Okita-san! You're wrong! Protecting the Bakufu won't protect this country!"

Okita: ?

Tsurugi: "You may not believe this, but... making the Bakufu accept this idea of restoring imperial rule will protect this country's future!"

Okita: "What do you mean?"

Tsurugi: "We're from this country's future. So we know."

Okita: !

I quietly stayed by Tsurugi, knowing this wouldn't be easy to tell.

Sakamoto: "He speaks the truth. You know yourself that preserving the Bakufu won't make this world a better place, don't you? Yet you turn your eyes away from the truth and act stubborn! Even if you kill me, nothing will change! What really needs to change is Japan's hesitancy and its tendency to stay isolated inside its narrow-minded comfort zone!"

Okita: "Are you saying that I... that we have been doing the wrong thing? That can't be!"

Tsurugi: "All you have to do is fix what's wrong! After you admit that you've done something wrong, you can direct yourself on the right path again!"

Okita: "But even if I recognize that now, there is nothing to be done!"

Tsurugi: "Are you giving up?"

Okita: "What is there I can do?!"

Tsurugi: "I know of a man who never gave up even when he was surrounded by nothing but despair! I have so much respect for him!"

"Tsurugi..."

I hold his hand.

Okita: "Even if I kept going, nothing will change!"

Everyone: !

Tsurugi: "Please give us your power! Your power can save so much!"

Okita: "I am Shinsengumi!"

Tsurugi: !

Okita: "I must protect the Bakufu!"

Everyone fell silent at his words, our words couldn't change his mind.
