SOMETHING HAD GONE wrong with the plan.

Rhiannon knew that the moment she hiked the hilltop with Steve and Robin and, in the distance, saw Starcourt's neon lights flash wildly into the night sky. The other sign was the crooked shadow now looming over the mall's roof. It seemed the monster had come for El, who was probably not on her way to Murray's hideout like she should've been. A sudden, near-apocalyptic desperation swelled inside her.

"We gotta get them out of there," Steve echoed her thoughts, already backing towards the car.

"If I can get close enough, maybe I can draw the monster away," said Rhiannon with a grim look.

"You think it'll take the bait?" Robin asked.

Heart growing ten times heavy, Rhiannon nodded. "He's after El, but he wants me too."

The ride was quiet for the trio, save for the low hum of the engine as Steve sped off. The road unspooled ahead in dark ribbons, winding over the jagged edges of town. Rhiannon slouched in the passenger seat, feeling the wind threading through her hair, cool against her flushed skin. Across the sky, fireworks scattered into a thousand constellations and painted the night in fractured color. She watched them with a strange ache lodged in her chest.

The Fourth of July party at Mayor Kline's carnival hadn't even crossed her mind with everything going on. It felt so far away. So normal. Briefly, she imagined herself there: blissfully ignorant, rotting her teeth with sickeningly sweet cotton candy, watching Steve try his luck at one of those rigged games, even winning her a stuffed bear. Not chasing a flesh monster terrorizing the mall.

She wanted this thing dead already. It had taken so much. And she couldn't help but think of who else could've been dead if the circumstances were different. What would've happened if the monster had made her take Steve? Her mom? Her dad?
