RHIANNON LIU HATED funerals.
They had a long history, funerals and her; she had started going to them from a young age, even though it wasn't supposed to be that way. Those years were for lethal crushes and stupid mistakes and everything brutal that came with girlhood, not a time for mourning. But death had a habit of always lingering too near. Always holding her hand in a loving embrace and refusing to let go.
Her first funeral was for a hamster. Mr. Spots, who Lori affectionately named after the splotches of tortoiseshell fur on his back, had keeled over after suffering a heart attack and met his untimely end. Like her mom, Lori was a celebrator of life, even in death. She was always sensitive about animals, to the point she'd even get down from her car and stop traffic just to help them cross the road. So, she had planned Mr. Spots a proper send-off, like it was a royal affair, and buried him in a bedazzled pink shoebox under the gardenias. Lori insisted they each say something nice. Rhiannon complimented his ability to always use his wheel as a bed instead of exercising — unlike her friend, she was never the sentimental one.
"What do you think he's doing now?" Rhiannon had asked once they were finished, staring at the lopsided mound of dirt.
(Note: they were eleven.)
"Rolling in piles of food in hamster heaven," Lori said, and they both laughed.
"Do you think that's where we go when we die?"
Lori, wiping her hands on her overalls, didn't hesitate. "My mom says we go someplace nice. Like a big garden. Or the beach."
"I don't want to go anywhere." Rhiannon frowned. "I wish we didn't have to."
"I don't think we really go away," Lori said thoughtfully. "We're all someone to somebody. We kinda stick around, like glitter. Forever. Just like you and me."
